Jewel Internal Filters |

How do you take them out of the tank, I mean completely remove them?
Also what sort of external filter should I get? |

|
hi kell dont think we spoke before.
im not sure on how to remove the jewel filter but as far as external goes i would use eheim wat size is your tank. |

|
Just get a hack saw blade or something similar and run it down the back between the filter and the glass. It won't take long as there is only about 4 lumps of silcone!

Hi trik, my tank is 100gals, the only external I can get from the lfs is a fluval 303 for £40, anything else I would have to order online. |

|
I got a sharp knife and slid it between the filter and the glass, it is silicon sealed into place. A sharp knife will cut through the silicone with little or no problems.
Good luck.

hmm I can see the stuff, just didnt know what it was, is it just sillicone, would I have to remove fish to take it off. |
04-07-2006 13:27 by Lexter
|
kell i have done it twice before and both times i just "gently" ripped it off the sides, with a bit of gentle pressure it comes off easily, or did for me.
i cant see why you would need to take the fish out.
if you follow my advice and flood your lounge, i am afraid i cannot except liability sweety |

Hi guys,
FYI you cannot remove Jewel built in filters, I have a 3ft with the box filter at the back right corner, its bonded in via silicone, i did remove it by getting a stanley blade down the edge but i wouldn't advise it, because to re fix it thge tank needs to be empty and dry, i'm guessing you have a build up of algae at the back you cant get to? Just use a baby bottle brush! |

|
i have had no trouble removing Ryan, must have been lucky, lots of people take them out and replace with better filters |
04-07-2006 14:31 by TARTINJOCK
|
I had no problem either, only thing to look out for if the fish are in there is small bits of Silicone floating about the tank, that the fish might swallow. |

|
thanks for the advice I will keep it in mind, I want that jewel filter out of there because it is pap, now I just need to find a good external, the one at the lfs was second hand, he was like pulling bits of it outa dusty dirty boxes, I was like nah your alright Ill keep looking. |
04-07-2006 14:51 by ryanroddis
|
Yeh i agree no problem removing them its just tricky to get them back on, if your upgrading filtration then fair enough but if its fore cleaning purposes i wouldn't bother! |
04-07-2006 15:02 by ryanroddis
|
Kell, Which Jewel set up do you have ? I wouldn't say that jewel filtration is pap, I find it to be one of the best internals out there (if the right media in the right place) is used, I have four Blue pads, Then a Carbon, then a bundle of Filter wool, and i feel its the best filter i've had! |
04-07-2006 15:06 by kell
|
I use the 4 blue pads, no carbon or floss in there unless I need them, I just dont think it is powerfull enough, it does seem to be doing its job, but I want it out, others who have removed theirs have said it was the best thing they have done and that there was loads more space. |
04-07-2006 15:10 by ryanroddis
|
Yeh i agree about more space, But to get more power replace the magnetic weight which spins the fan, if you know what i mean, I had the same problem Kell, not enough power or flow, But i looked on Jewels website, found the right combonation of pads and where to put them, replaced the weight and mine is fantastic, i can do a large water change and within an hour its like vodka! Crystal Clear! |
04-07-2006 15:12 by ryanroddis
|
Are you drawing air into the tank through a hose or are you using a powerhead to push air in? I found by removing the hose and letting the powerhead add oxygen that also increased the power of it! |
04-07-2006 15:41 by kell
|
I dont really understand what you mean, but I take it you mean replace my powerhead with a bigger one, I have a powerhead 1000 and I can get a 1500 |
04-07-2006 15:48 by ryanroddis
|
On your outpipe from the filter you may have a hose which sits above water level enabling the pump to draw air in! if you do have that remove it, You will increase power!
I wouldn't change the powerhead, the one you have got should suffice!
Right, If you remove the lid of the filter, You will see the mechanism what push's the water back out, Remove that and under neath you should see a propeler, If you pull on that it will come out! Replace that, or give it a good clean! The way i look at it Kell is that filter was designed for that aquarium, By removing it you could break something, You may not get all the silicone off (So could look a mess), I would try my best to get the built in filter to the best of its capibilty before attemting to cut, slice, peel anything away from the glass! |
04-07-2006 15:53 by von
|
You can upgrade it by usuing better media, the sponges that come with it are best suited to tanks with few small fish and lots of plants, in mine i have sintered glass then 3 blue sponges then loads of filter wool, i also have an external on there. |
04-07-2006 15:57 by ryanroddis
|
Listen to Von Kell, As i have said in previos msg's, ram it with filter wool after the blue pads, where von has glass i have a carbon pad which i change weekly! Stick to the internal Kell, I would hate to see a nice Jewel set up go down the pan! I can picture u now with a kitchen knife in your hand, Broken glass all over the floor and fish everyweher! Von..... Hope i didn't upset u yesterday |
04-07-2006 16:04 by -Rob C-
|
I did when the tank was still filled, with fish in. I had no problems. It look ALOT nicer and much more space for fish. |
04-07-2006 16:06 by ryanroddis
|
I dont disagree with removing it, Personal preference, But think before u act Kell... it could turn pair shaped! |
04-07-2006 16:09 by von
|
Just don't stress the glass, i only keep mine because it's covered by glued on rocks, if it wasn't i'd take it out, i do think they're a bit poo |
04-07-2006 16:15 by telboy
|
i dont like the built in internals, they look bad, take up too much space, + personally i dont think they're that good, also ya fish get stuck in there, mine had 4 small blobs sealant, gentle tug + it came out job done!!! |
04-07-2006 16:24 by ryanroddis
|
As i keep saying personal preference... i think its getting a little clicky, At the end of the day Kell its upto u, You have plenty of opinions the choice is yours! I've worked with glass for the last 3 years, and anything bonded to it is always going to tricky to get off, Your never going to get 2 tanks which have been sealed the same, just cos the majority have had it easy doesn't mean your going to! |
04-07-2006 16:43 by ryanroddis
|
Another thing to bare in mind Kell is "Thermal Stress" and take this from a person who worked for the biggest glass company in the world, If you remove the filter with a knife you will more than likely scratch it... So because you have broken the surface of the glass your allowing the silicate (which is what glass is) to be disturbed, if the temp on the outisde of the tank is cool and the temp on the inside is high i will guarentee that you will get a thermal break! The tank will more than likely crack from top to bottom! I just wouldn't risk it, its not worth it! |
04-07-2006 16:48 by von
|
It's not ''clicky'' Ryan, people are just giving their opinion as were you. If we don't all agrtee with you it's doesn't mean we're in a clique |
04-07-2006 16:48 by von
|
*agree* |
04-07-2006 17:08 by telboy
|
here here von,why clique ryan??? |
04-07-2006 17:15 by -Rob C-
|
I'm speaking from experience, I know it works! It is only opinions, well said von! |
04-07-2006 17:15 by kell
|
well Im definately getting rid of the internal, but I will do some revision on the best external to get first....Well done ryan for trying to change my mind, you nearly did it. |

just my little bit of input did you know glass is all ways in a liquid state . i will find the thread , over time glass in a upright position will slowly move wat would start out at 10mm in the end over say 10 years would be 8mm at the top and 12mm at the bottom, i will find the spec thread and post. |
04-07-2006 18:23 by trik
|
funny as well it was a doc on pilkington
I was watching the discovery channel and there was i show called 'how do they make that'(i think thats what it was called).
Anywho they were making glass at Pilkingtons and they said that glass isn't a solid but its still in liquid state.Infact if you own a very old tank of say over 10 years old the glass will be slightly thicker at the bottom of each pane due to glass slowly moving down the pane!
Also during the glass making process its essential that glass is added to the molten mix of sand and other products used.If the glass isn't added the process goes boobs up and according to Pilkingtons they are not 100% sure why!
Very interesting so it was! Before anyones says it i know I'm a sad git lol.

I found Stanley blade wouldn't reach all of silicon blobs. So got a cheap craft knife, the one's that you use, then snap the blade end off and use again. I just extended this to full length, which also made it quite flexible. I was then able to cut through silicon without digging into the glass. Once the filter was out I tidied up using a stanley blade flat against the glass (like you would with a wallpaper scraper).
I did it with the fish insitu. One thing to remember is make sure you clean the blade first. Many are coated with oil to prevent rusting |
