hi is this a power head? should there be something on the bottom like there is on a internal filter?
my friend gave me a load of his old stuff and i thought i would use it just as a pump to make more water movement for oxygen would this work |

Looks like a powerhead to me, I would advise though if you have small fish to put a piece of course filter pad in the intake, I lost a young plec as a result of it getting sucked into the powerhead, a piece of course filter pad cut to size is ideal to prevent this, I just remove it once a week and clean t out then put it back. A syou can see from the pic it has a pellet sucked onto it just now, hope that helps

usualy a power head would connect to a plastic tube conected to undergravel filter plate's.....
you should be able to use it as a pump to oxygenate water ,just cover the inlet pipe with something to stop fish being sucked into the pump
the pump placed near the top of the tank will cause water surface movement this is where it will oxygenate the water best.

i think if powerhead was fixed to a ug filter the movement is so u can direct the water flow to your liking.
on some power heads u can fit a bit of airline tube to the top.....have this above the water level and it will add airbubbles to the flow

I have seen these powerheads before can't remeber the name but the nozzle is meant to move side to side when the thing is running.
Do you have any other bits with the powerhead normally there is a plastic nozzle with loads of holes in it that can be slotted on to the intake it may then be the case that no sponge is needed dependinmg on the tank inhabitants but it also means fitting a sponge is easier I just nip to world of water near me when I need a sponge they cost about 10 pence and slot over the intake nicely. |

This is a powerhead you have got and you can buy a filter with sponge inside and are very effective cleaning and oxygenisig in a chiclid tank |

as long as your head is powerful you shouldnt have a problem, at least 1000 l/hr |
