Morning chaps, I woke this morning and realised i have a missing Mbnua Eshtrae (think thats how ya spell it).. Cant find him anywhere, do you think other mbuna would eat him????

Should i do a water change as a precaution????

Try and look for him under any rocks or plants. have a look at the top of the water because fish tend to float after they die. So if there is still no sign of him then the other one would have eaten it.

Cheers Kay... if you look on earlier thread called Pic of new tanks, my set up is right at the bottom, I have loads of ocean rock so he could be anywhere!!! Def not floating tho

They won't always float, be careful you could get an ammonia spike if he is dead and you don't find him.

Keep an eye out for it, do you definately know it's dead? if you know how long it's been in ther dead and you find a body as long as it's not been too long it will be ok, if no body and no live fish! they've eaten it so no probs with water, if you find it and it's been a while i would change maybe 20% of the water, how much do you normally change?

10:19 by ryanroddis
Usually 10% weekly and 20% fornightlighly when i do a clean out.. Its def missing, I saw him resting the other day and i thought something was up, he was there before work yesterday but when i got home there we're no sign of him!!!

Then if you find him do a change, if you don't he will still pollute the water after you change it so i would try to find him first, are any of the others hanging around a specfic place in the tank? does the tank smell a bit?

It happens to us all, i lost an old favourite recently too. I'm sure the others will of eaten him, especially by the end of today, my fish always tend to leave a bit though so be careful.

I know, its still guts you though, He was just starting to mature too i think, What do the spotts mean to the rear finage Von? I know i lack experience so be patient with me love!

11:17 by richard hulley
the spots are egg spots which are fake to encourage the female to think they are eggs which she then in turn take into her mouth, what she doesnt realise is that she is taking the male fluid to fertilise the eggs that she does have in her mouth, the fish could be stuck in a hole, prepare for a bad smell when you pull it out, you may need to take all your rocks out to get at him,/

They are eggs spots, to attract the females. She will think they are eggs that need to be collected in her mouth if you catch my drift! not always though. However some females have them too. As you get more experience you will be able to tell the difference between the male and female spots.

Hmmmm..... I personally find it difficult to tell them apart, I rely on LFS to tell me whats what!!!

11:32 by von
Do some research on the net or get a good book, lfs's aren't always that reliable and nice to know what your looking at when you go to buy fish.
