As soon as you lose flow through it the bacteria dies off instantly. very good bacterial filtration though as darren sayes. |

it will be running of the outlet hose of the filter, does this mean everytime i switch filter off for cleaning the bacteria will die, how long will it take for bacteria to form again. |

as far as im aware not to long , i did look into running one, but decided against it, a mate of mine runs one with a sump and swears by it. |

iv just spoke to him , at the bottom of the sand he has a small handfull of gravel about 3mm in size , this holds the bacteria longer than the sand wen flow fails, and re seeds it very quick wen started up again , HTH. |

The gravel at the bottom also stops the sand backing up in the filter when the power is turned off incidentally the bacteria do not die of instantly when the power goes off they are fine for a few hours as long as the fluidised bed doesn't go anaerobic. Also they do take longer to mature than normal filtersa but they do have a huge capacity.
I wouldn't recommend running one of these off of a canister filter they should have a dedicated pump just for them to maintain a constant flow as they do require tuning the flow rate is much lower than that needed for a canister filter.
Rainbow lifeguard are probably the best fluidised sand bed filters about and you can get the sand especially for them.
go on www.aquacadabra.co.uk and download their catalogue they sell the rainbow lifeguard for £69.95 anmd the sand for £14.95. |
