Poorly Parrots again |

I have just come home to find my 2 lovely parrot fish looking veery unwell. They are covered in pale white cotton looking stuff and just lying on the bottom of the tank.
I did a 30% water change yesterday for the first time since I got these and they haev been very subdued ever since. The water had been treated and left for 36 hours before being put into the tank but I can't think what else could haev caused this so suddenly.
Any ideas what it is and what I can do??? |

could be fungus ! |

could be fungus, most probally is columnaris though, would need to treat with antibiotics, as far as I know it is pretty much incurable though, got to get it in the early stages. |

definatly not incurable so dont worry. it will be fungus/columnarius and its simple treated with an anti fungal medication. my worry would be how it has happened in the first place. this type of sickness is normally related to bad water conditions. have you tested your water recently?
its likely that you are poisoning the parrots slowly which will drop the fish' immune system causing the fungus to really get a hold.
i think you can also use salt baths to treat this illness but dont take my word for it, do a little google research. |

Thanks Rob / Danny. I have just put some anti fungal treatment in the tank, so fingers crossed.
The water condition has looked fine. I test it every Sunday and had no concerns. However I did a "routine" water change yesterday and cleaned out teh filter (which was actually very clean). I am concerned that since it happened so suddenly after the water change that maybe it was the water I added that is contaminated. The fish had both been as lively as usual before the change but immediately afterwards were very subdued. I assumed this was just stress due to teh water change, but today they were worse and i noticed the whispy growths on them both. |

well as a rule nice fresh clean water will only invigorate the fish, unless its too cold. seeing as you left the water for ages it would have been room temp which would be fine.
you say you cleaned the filter. i hope you did this in tank water and not tap water? also i always advise people to do a 30% water change once a week. (missing the odd week here and there wont hurt this way)
also when you treat the water it is instant. you dont need to leave it for any length of time |

Cheers Danny Boy. Lets hope it clears up - teh poor things don't look happy right now.
I have never changed water that often - but will start - once I check that my tap water is ok!! |

well in that case im 95% sure your problem is the lack of water changes. |

Really? I only usually change 30% out once a month. And the recomendation I had was every 4 - 6 weeks.
Am willing to give it a try tho |

well it does depend on the amount of water and the amount of fish. but to be honest its better to change more than less. id certainly not recommend once every 6 weeks, unless you want to see illness in your tank. it sounds like the kind of advice id expect to hear from someone in a fish shop who makes money from selling treatments for sick fish. do you follow?

basically without regular water changes the fish are swimming in their own waste however i only do mine once a fortnight .one third water change |

i try and do it once a week but i dont panic if it runs over to 2 weeks |

i must confess im a 2 week'er ,
its tough treating fish ! i have a comunity tank and i remove sick fish to a smaller plastic storage bin, i know exactly the quantity of the container and it saves £££ on treatment as u dont use the wole bottle in one treatmen !....just a thought .....good luck ! |

i think its fine to change water every two weeks, but im a firm believer that if you tell people to change the water every week then if they slip its not as bad. tell them to change water every two weeks and they leave it for three is diffrent. always best to promote regulr and often water changes. |

any news on the parrots? |
26-07-2006 21:48 by Parrotboy

Yeah looking like good news
They are certainly not back to their usual selves, but they are swimming around again and most of the fungus has gone from them
Hopefully they are on their way to a full recovery |

JUst a quick update.
Unfortunately it looks liek 1 of my 2 parrots suffered soem kind of stroke (or whatever teh fish equivalent is). I guess the illness was too much for him. He is still alive but very slow and takes occasional fits where he darts round and round the tank jumping out of the water, doing loop the loops and crashing into things. Don't think there is much I can do for the poor wee thing.
His partner tries to help him to the food at feeding times since he doesnt haev much movemnt in general. I have been hand feeding him small amounts and he seems to be getting on ok.
Will just have to see what the next few days hold for him.
The other one appears to have made a full recovery. |
