Dont you mean Mbuna Estratae, Is he/she a pink/cream colour?

Red zebra'a are orange as young, turn more red as they mature.

Sounds like stress related to me, How much light are you giving them a day...

I give my malaw's 5 hours light per day!

Hello darknight,M.Estherae, are very variable in colour, the best are bright orange/red,but they can fade out as they mature, also colour loss can be down to bacterial infection,if you can isolate it try an anti bac med, what are the fins like?

Hiya Ray, I have seen Mbuna Estherae (wild) fully grown, 6" or so and it was no where near red, more light pink/cream than a red, I have a red zebra at about 4-5", and she is striking red in colour, but the younger red zebra's or more orange, dont u think darknight's issue is more stress related, cosnidering all the other fish are fine!

The fins are fine, the fish seems to be healthy apart from the discolouration.
I think it is a M.Estherae.
Here is what he looks like..he is 4 inches long. (sorry about pic quality)

I have seen cobalt zebras and yellow labs like that before probably due to tank breeding for generations

Never come across it Ray, but thanks for the info, would like to know if this patch came over night or has slowly got worse, becuase that would sugguest something totally different to what u have said!

Hes been like this for a while probably 6 weeks or so...it started on one side then spread to the other & is now about half the length of the fish.

Seems strange mate, I'm sure when the likes of Alan and Lexter see this thread they will give u more of an idea what it is, does he seem to be acting ok ?

yep the fish seems fine apart from the discolouration. Thanks for the interest everyone...I'll try & get a better pic so we can determine a better diagnosis?? (if indeed he is sick???)

I dont think he is sick mate, Considering he's been like it for over 6 weeks, if he was to die he would have done it by now i think.

Estherae when wild are deep orange and the male blue, not pinky cream.

Yanton has some wild and will enlighten you with his pictures. when pinky cream this is due to the continuous breeding down the generations. you would know a wild from a tank bred.

Can we just clear up that the word mbuna is just the african word for rock dwelling (closest translation). It is a metriaclima estherae.
