My block moor has had swim bladder problems since about the time i got him 1 and half years ago, when it got bad i would put him in a tank with 6 inches of water kosher salt and hand feed him peas and brine shrimp, but its gotten worse, for months now he hasent been able to do anything more than float upside down on the top of the tank. This time the seperate tank isnt helping him. I dont wanna flush him.. he still eats and tries to flip over, It must be frustrating..Any one have any other ideas? or should i just end his life?? Im tired of changing his water in his goldfish bowl and hand feeding him daily.. The fish in the regular tank just swim at the side of the tank and watch him lol.. |

Whats the water quality like. Salt usually only works for external ailments like whitespot. You could try a wide range disease treatment or a specific one for swim bladder. |

sorry to hear it about your fish but if you have to the quickest and cleanest way to cull it is to give it a sharp hard blow to the head (if done right death is instant )
do not put it in the freezer as some will suggest as this is very slow at causing death (it splits all the cells in the body as they freeze) |

if it is swimbladder interpet do a medication you could try its called swimbladder treatment
when you feed it does it always feed from the surface if so it could just be trapped air in its gullet causing it to float to the surface you could try feeding a sinking pellet that may help |

There are genetic problems associated with fancy goldfish this being one of them they have an overly compressed and deformed swimbladder as well as funny guts.
As a result there probably is very little you can do as it is often a recurring condition and in this case seems chronic.
I would attempt to treat it with an off the shelf remedy and if this doesn't work euthanase the fish but don't do this by flushing it down the loo dissolve a large amount of asprin in the water the fish is in this will put the fish to sleep humanely. Equally decapitation is a method of euthanasure commonly used but I do not think this is particularly humane equally clubbing a fish to death is not humane. Exact dosage of aspirin I am not sure of but you can normally find it in a good fish health book if you can't find the details post on here and I will have a look through my books at home. |

Sorry to hear a bout your fish Jewel. We have 2 discus that are having swim-bladder difficulites. I have read in several places about feading them peas like you have been doing. I'd like to try this. Are these peas cooked or raw? Do they need any special preperation or do you just put them in the tank as is? Thanks! |

ey there, how bad was your fishy with the whole buoyancy thing. My fish has progressively got worse and now he's almost upside down on the bottom of the tank. It's very distressing to see. I've been trying to help him for a few days now, just feeding him a pea every morning but maybe i shoudl just fast him? I've also been treating him with some swim bladder medication. He's on his own at the mo as one of the other fish he was in with started to bully him and thats the last thing he needs rigth now. He looks a very sorry sight He's a golden panchax. Please help!!! |

as far as i am concerned the the top methods for euthanising are
1. slam the fish on a hard surface with a lot of force, BUT the fish must be not too small and not too big (i.e 2cm to 5cm)
2. frozen water, lots of ice but still some water, as cold as you can possibly get it without freezing over, FOR TROPICAL FISH
3. Clove oil and small vodka mix
Aspirin? possibly, but do your research you will rarely see aspirin as a method |

try feeding only sinking food as this way the fish wont take in any air while eating |
