Hi guys, firstly sorry about the spelling, haven't got my book with me as i'm at work so cant spell it correctly, but think u get what i'm talking about...

Bought a pair of these beauty's yesterday, about 3", male and female, I took them home aclamitised properly, left floating in the ba for about 20 mins so my other malawi's could get used to seeing them, anyway released them into the tank and within an hour my fish destroyed them, they wouldn't leave them alone, Tared fins to bits and just plagued them to death...it wasn't just 1 fish doing the damage it was all of them, everytime they swam oast anything they would be nipped at and jumped on..... cost me £15 for the pair but thats beside the point....

Why did my other malawi's kill them?

perhaps u would have been better introducing a couple of pairs instead of 1 pair to cut down the aggresion.as u no cichlids are territorial and malawis are very aggressive, could be a factor even thou u left em in bag for 20 min so the other fish get use to em they obviously thought we aint having these in here.

It was horrible to watch too, I couldn't catch them to remove them, i would have taken them straight back to lfs if i could have.....

The colours we're amazing so i wonder if they just stuck out like a sore thumb..... i wont be trying to pais, i feel i'd be throwing money away...its made me think twice!!!

I am assuming your malawi's are mbuna, Mbuna are much more agressive than Aulonocara. Sometimes they can be mixed but it is best to establish the aulonocara first and then add peaceful mbuna species.

Aulonocara tend to do best when not overcrowded (unlike mbuna) so I would give a trio a square foot of space, so are better kept with other haplochromine species.

Sorry for your loss they are stunning fish, but just can't hold their own with mbuna, due to agression and feeding (they find it difficult to get food, not beng particularly aggressive feeders)

I have also had this happen with new additions, so now I feed the resident fish to distract them, and make sure there is plenty of rockwork for the new fish to hide in, so they can gradually find there place in the community.

I have 30kg of Ocean rock, Hiding places are plenty, also fed the fish twice whilst Aloncara where getting detsroyed to distract them, when they finished eating they carried on....

I bought on impulse, then when i read my book when i was back home it acutally said they dont fair well with Mbuna.... wish i'd have known, but saying that the guy at lfs never said anything!

Yup, they should of, as I said it can be done. But there are issues to deal with when mixing stuff that do not comfortably mix, and they should have asked your tank size and species you had.

The shop really should ask you these questions and should advise you on firstly what will work and then let you know that although aulonocara can work, you might have problems, then you can make your own mind up.

hi,old advice for putting new Malawis in a tank is to remove all the rocks from the tank, add the new fish the put the rocks back in new positions.this sometimes works, but it is much more difficult to add fish to a smaller system.Rockwork in an Mbuna tank should cover the back of the tank almost to the water surface,so I dont think 30kg is enough, you can get limestone rocks at garden centres cheaply and flint nodules work well, hope this helps.
