hi ive only just got back in to keeping fish after a few years break due to having a nightmare with my previous tank, i had a great set up with lots of healthy fish untill i tried introducing a new fish which turned out to have white spot i tried to treat it with the correct treatment from the lfs but as soon as i added it to the water (followed the instructions to the letter) my fish started to die i did a mad water change and turned up the pumps as they were all gasping for breath etc i ended up losing all my fish with in a day of adding the treatment, and talking to a friend who recently treated her fish and lost a few fish i was just wondering if this is a regular thing? id never needed to use any treatments befor so didnt know if it was usuall for treatments to some times cause more damage than good? is there any more less damaging ways to treat fish that any one knows?
i have only ever lost fish to medication when i have isolated them as a last resort and used HIGH dose meds (i.e. black mollies with fungus when salt hasnt worked etc) - that was back in the days tho, now i would prefer to euthanise the fish.
BUT, in repsonse, i cant say i have ever had this problem, i have several tanks, only ever need medication for my livebeaer tank and have used about 5 or 6 types of meds in last 6 months or so, never really had any death i can attirbute to the meds, the only fish that have died have been the fish that were sick BEFORE i added the meds.
Some peeps swear blind they NEVER use chemicals or meds, i really admire this, but sometimes it unavoidable, if i hadnt of used certain anti parasite medications in my live bearer tank i am sure they would all be dead by now
For some diseases you dont HAVE to use meds as a first resort, but depends on your fish and the tank set-up, for example, fungus can be treated with salt alone, white spot can be treated with a combination of salt and high temp (but this is no way as effective as the medication from what i understand)
for example if you have white spot in your tank, there is often no other way but to use medication, you cant take the fish out and treat it or even take the fish out and kill it, because the white spot will be all over the tank by then,
Some fish dont take well to medication and some are not bothered as long as you stick to the correct dose
Unless speicfied, never use more than one types of meds at a time, always remove charcoal filtration (did you do this before), and often you need to increase the oxygen content as lots of meds reduce the available oxygen in the tank.
Sorry for the ramble, but i am "working" from home today working on here more like, going to invoice Webmaster
