this may seem like a silly question to a lot of you but what exactly is a nano marine system. i know its a small marine set up but is there any other difference. do they have filters on or skimmers, special plants?.i have heard they are self sufficient and need nothing but light ,is this true? how does that work. |

Self sufficiency is dependent on what is kept.
Filtration should consist of live rock as much as you can squeeze in ideally at least 1 kilo for every 2 gallons.
Protein skimmer air driven is ideal.
Power heads to turn the total water volume over at least 20 times an hour.
Lighting 2 T5's should be sufficient.
Stocking the tank is the difficult bit polyp colonies and mushroom nems are the best bet. Fish wise think neon gobies and the like nothing bigger and keep the stocking density very low.
You will need all the usual marine equipment to go with it i.e. RO unit refractometer etc etc. |

nano simply refers to small.
you can build up your own (see above) or buy all the equipment you need.
there is a good article in this months practical fishkeeping about them.
for nano reefs, the secret seems to be top quality live rock, good lighting, little livestock and good care techniques. |
