I started with 6 but they have killed one and are picking on a another 1 which Ive seperated and will try and reintroduce. They are by them selves in a 2ft tank with sand and lots of broken clay pots. I'll go and test pH in a minute. Any ideas why they arent breeding smallest is about 2" and that the one thats been seperated.
Thanks Rob

pH is about 7.2
temperature is about 24
filtration is 2 air powered sponge filters
water changes are 20% weekly
i know these are common fish and arent really worth much value but i want to see some cichlids spawning |

right mate, i been keeping a breeding group of these for about 8 months
started off with 6, got 3 now
2 got killed by each other when i moved tank about and 1 got killed by a convict when he jumped over the divider, and he only jumped over the divider coz he was running for his life from the others
one word of warning, in my experience if you introduce a new brichardi or move tank around they either "welcome the new addtion" or "reject" and when i have moved tank around or moved the brichardi to another tank they always seem to reject another one,
the rejected Brichardi will be killed, if you have a brichardi hiding in the corner from the rest, thats a dead brichardi unless you move it in my experience,
moving the fish and re arranging the tank CAN work, re introducing the rejected fish into the same set-up DOESNT work in my experience, the brichardi seem to "remember" and will push the other out again
as for breeding, i think they are a fish that if things are ok will breed automatically
pH 7.2 inst too bad, mine is about 8.0, as you know Rob they Tangy and prefer even harder water and higher pH than Malawi (generally)
if breeding Brichardi i would def have them in own tank (as you have) they kicked the sh** out of convicts twice there size when i moved them to a convct tank due to no space
Brichardi breeding will KILL fish quicker than convicts will, they do MORE damage coz of their speed and the fact the seem to "target" fins and rip them off the other fish!!!!
Rob, i would remove the rejected brichardi and try to sell him or swap him / her and unless you re-do your whole tank he will be rejected again when re introduced (in my experience)
If your have 5 Brichardi in their own tank and dont disturb them, you SHOULD see fry within 6-8 weeks UNLESS water parameterers are wrong OR they all same sex
I find even healthy, breeding brichardi's are quite "skittish" so hiding places and loads of rock, caves are essential in my opinion
Great fish to breed, the other "non-parents" will also guard fry and when the fry are older they will keep an eye on the new borns, they dont each other like those bleedin' Convicts
if you have 5 you would be pretty unlikely to have all same sex, but trouble with Brichardi is they hard to sex as far as i know
when getting ready to breed they will start to move some sand around and spit some out etc
they also play "games" with other, sudden darting movements etc
The less disturbance in the tank the better, set it up, remove the rejected fish and dont touch ANYTHING expept for filter maintenance
Rob - knowing you ecperience and the fact water is 7.2 and atleast not acid, i would guess only reason for non breeding would be fish are all same sex
HOWEVER -the fact one has been rejected indicates to me they are mixed sex and forming the hierarcy for their (nuclear family)

Rob- i have to say again to be clear, in my experience once Brichardi reject another one thats it, they are saying "take him away" |

anyone in tyne and wear want a neolamprologus brichardi?? |
17-08-2006 21:07 by Lexter

you could "try" and re introduce rejeected fish Rob, but if it doesnt work will only delay breeding
i stand by my comment, they fact they have rejected one, would to me indictae they are mixed sex (atleast one female) and preparing the "family"
interesting and bautiful fish
i still have about 30 1.5 cm young, selling adults to Telboy, will breed these fish again i am sure
also want to try Dafodil Brichardi |
