As many if you know i am setting up my first marine tank. Instead of my rio iv just bought a juwel vision 260 which i think will show off my reef to its full potential. Iv doe some research and found that you can have live sand as well as live rock. with the live stuff can you mix it with dead stuff (ocean rock and coral sand)and if that is a yes will the live stuff merge with the dead stuff to form all live? Sounds a silly question but its a lot cheaper to buy like half live and half dead.
Im going on holiday in october so my tank wont even be started curing till start of november. But i want to do as much research till then.
Thanks |

use the dead stuff like ocean rock /tuffa rock at the back where you wont see , and id just put coral sand on the base as it will become live after a time. |

Yes you can mix live sand and 'normal sand, Live sand does not replace live rock though, but it will help to maintain a diverse level of life in the tank, and speed up the rate at which your sand will become live. Remeber you will need some larger creatures like snails, carbs sand starfish to help maintain your sandbed.
But if you can go for live rock for your filteration (1kg per 2 gallons) Rather than other filteration I would as although expensive, it is a ver good and easy way to maintain your tank. |

We have done a ot f research into this tank... The costing is very high but we have got an idea of the sorts of things we want..
Yes i am going to have lots of live rock.. i know it is totally beneficial. Great to hear you can mix both sand and rock with the dead stuff.
The main reason im having the tank is for the snails, shrimp, anenomes, hermits, corals etc. And add maybe a few small fish to liven it up a little.
Iv got a UV and iv got the power heads. Iv got a fluval 404 and a 4000 litres per hour bucket filter system too.
I know the other equipment i need and will get that when i get back off holiday.
I also have just bought a second lamp set for the tank so iv got 4 tubes for extra light.
im so excited. Im going tropical |

Personally I would only use live rock and live sand this maximises from the get go the biological capacity of the tank.
I have used a mix of live a ocean rock and to be honest I wish I hadn't initially it would have saved me a lot of time just getting 30 kilos of live rock from the start.
As far as filtration goes with the live rock and a skimmer plus a few power heads no other filtration is needed especially if you are only keeping a few choice fish.
