fishkeepers dilema |

I keep Malawis, and to be honest have in the past disagreed with people who keep/breed hybrids, but 3 months ago a friend bought me two fish that were supposed to be a pair of Aulonocara but are some dull brown hybrids, that eat like horses and take up tank space. So today was my quarterly stripdown, rocks out and rearranged(looks pretty good I think, lol) babies caught and the hybrids removed,no one wants these horrible fish so the only destination was the freezer. They were bagged up and then I thought what would you people do next??????? |

This is a difficult dilema but I admire Ray for NOT passing on these fish, there are more than enough hybrids in the hobby as it is, especially with Malawi's.
Take a trip to a lot of LFS's and you can see them being sold as true species for exhorbitant prices.
Now thats wrong.
What Ray is doing is avoiding anyone from being ripped off. OK so someone would take them off his hands, but what would they do with them when they get feb up ?
Ray's only mistake was mentioning what he planned to do. |

WHAT HE HAD DONE ,"WAS THE FREEZER" AND "THEY WERE BAGGED UP AND" WHO ARE YOU TO DECIDE WHO OR WHAT SHOULD LIVE |

No need to shout Wayne,or be personal I did say it was a dilema, what would you do?The reason they are not on classifieds is that no body would want them and I feel it is wrong to allow them to breed. |

Oh dear did not start this thread to cause trouble,Webmaster I thought Wayne's bridge comment was funny.I was rather hoping to start a debate on the ethics of some parts of fishkeping but it seems to have backfired.
To put a stop to this the fish in question are alive and well and still eating my expensive food.I would never destroy a healthy creature, however if I could get my hands on the moron who bred them, that would be a different matter! |

I agree with you on this one Wayne but as the fish are still alive and well i think its time to put an end to this thread webbie.
But i can see where your coming from ray but as for killing them fish is a diff mater. |

Why delete a thread just because it touches a contentious subject, at least its fish related.
I'm not against euthenasia if necessary, but I also dont advocate it.
What I am against is the widespread distribution of hybrids that should have no place in a hobby that has 1000's of species to chose from without people purposely playing god just to see what happens.
Ray was duped, and he wont be the last until people stop passing such fish into the hobby.
Malawis are one of the easiest fish to hybridise, so responsible keepers will do thier best to ensure it doesnt happen, and if it does, keep any offspring to themselves. |

i think its probably the right thing to do or does ray have a responsibility to the fish he owns? the right thing though is to not let these mutts breed with pure bred fish etc etc. and if you know ray he has a nice collection of quality fish and is one of the FI malawi experts. |

Although I'm totally against hybrids it doesnt mean I dont have one of my own which came with some "real fish".

WHITS THE ISSUE HERE,, HYBRIDS ARE NOT WELCOME, OR FREEZING THEM,, IF THEY ARE NOT WANTED AND ITS CRUEL TO KILL THEM, THEN IS IT AN ISSUE IF I FEED THEM TO MY FISH, ONCE THEY ARE ALREADY DEAD.......... |

KOBISKYE - I personally dont have an issue with you feeding dead fish, and can accept that some fish do need live food until they become accustomed to dead food.
My recent issue was that you posted the video of your Arrow being fed a live goldfish, injured or otherwise. |

AROWANA VIDEO WAS REQUESTED BY SOME PEOPLE ON THIS FORUM TO BE POSTED, SO I DID, THE TITLE JARDINI V GOLDFISH SHOULD HAVE BEEN A CLUE TO ITS CONTENT,, SO IF THINGS LIKE THAT OFFEND YOU YOU SHOULDN'T OFF VIEWED IT,, MY ISSUE WAS THE FACT THAT PEOPLE STARTED TO SLAG MY FAMILY BECAUSE OF IT,, DIFFERENT ISSUE AGAIN....THIS TYPE OF TOPIC WILL ALWAYS CAUSE DEBATES,,,,WHICH MAKES FISH KEEPING ALL THE MORE INTERESTING,, DIFFERENT PEOPLE,, DIFFERENT FISH,,,DIFFERENT FEEDING TECHNIQUES,,,DIFFERENT VIEWS |
