hi i have purchased a pair of red rams a few weeks ago. The shop told us they wer a pair. but the problem is we dont know which is which. one is bullying the other alot and its starting to worry me. one has a longer tail this is the one who is being chased and the one we were lead to believe was the male.
also i have noticed that when we feed them flakes the 1 being bullied gets a lump under its mouth. its as if its choking. It bobs up and down and breaths heavly. then after a minute, after the lump goes and hes fine
any advise will be welcomed
thanx xxxx |

The first one looks like a male bolivian ram. I havent got a clue about the second one though |

thanx rob c!
we were told the first was the female and the second a male (longer pointed tail).
the first pic is the one doing all the chasing of the second one. |

Long time since I kept Rams but i always looked at the 2nd spine of the dorsal fin
In males it is slightly elongated where-as the in females it is the same size as the rest and follows the dorsal contour |

thanx wymcot!
the dorsal fin apears the same on both of the fish. |

Thought you might say that, are they both extended ?
You'd best wait for one of the experts to confirm what I suggested before going back to the LFS |

no they both apear the same size all along on both fish. |

looks like two males to me. the one being bullied will have less coulor so as not to compete with the alpha male. sound familiar?
without trying to preach to you fishy its very important to research your own fish before you buy them. when you are in the shop with your money you should already have a fair idea how to sex them if at all possible and alos if they are compatible with the fish you already own. never, i repeat NEVER trust some spotty school leaver who has a pond outside his house. they earn a pittance and as a rule assume they know nothing, as this is usually the case |

thanx danny boy!
yer we did research into rams, alot in fact.
the water conditions in the tank are spot on.
kept in perfect ro water ect ect.
just we seem to be having problems sexing them.
i understand this to be very hard tho?

I've got 2 males and have the same problem, I did exactly the same thing as you! The dominant one is agressive and the other one has alot less colour but theyve been together atleast a year now. Just make sure theres hinding places and theyll be ok.
Oh annd DB do you no trust me! |

yer they ahve loads of hiding places.
they seem ok together jus dont like to see the other one chasing him.
do you recon getting two more of them will help matters? |

if it were my tank i would remove the picked on male and swap him for a real female. |

hi fishy
i also have just bought a pair of rams....mine are golden.
before i bought them i reasearched them on internet and found a few pages on google saying be carefull when you purchase because its quite comon practice for some companys to only import MALE Rams due to them being more colourful
Its true that the second dorsel fin on males are longer than that of the femals .....
females will also get a purple belly when they are kept in Ro water and are in breeding condition......
typing into google sexing ram cichlids i came upon this web page .......scroll down a little and read some of the Q+A !! i found it intresting and has a few photos.....
http://www.thekrib.com/Apisto/P-ramirezi.html
good luck !!! to me it sounds like you have 2 males...
keep us updated......

Not sure about the eating problem .....is it only flake you feed them ?
does this happen with bloodworm and pellet foods????
try some other foods and let us know how they do ........
it might be a simple case that it cant eat dry food very easy.. |

Yours are bolivian rams - M. altispinosa - these can be very difficult to sex in my opinion, much tricker than normal rams. I think you have a healthy male and a skinny one that should not have been sold.

if you want to breed them then i suggest that you buy at least 8 in total so they can pair naturally. you are all right about the dorsal male/female thing. if they are just additions to a community tank then either swap the bullied one or get a couple more |

NEITHER OF THE RAMS ARE WHAT I WHOULD CALL SKINNY ONES.
THEY ARE BOTH EXACTLY THE SAME SIZE.
I THINK IM PROBLY GOING TO GET TOO MORE.

Yes this is a sign of aggression, but this may be male and female or two of the same sex as long as you have a couple of places to hide it should be ok. |
