they are very cheap i know that. never come across anyone on any forums that have said how good they are but nor vice versa. ebay will be a good place to find media have a quick look

You dont have to use Penn Plax media, so the media should be no problem, it is whatever you wish to use.
They look fairly robust and I have heard no bad reports.

I found them effective for filtering, but much too noisy for the living room.

so i opted for fluval fx5 - very quiet and effective.
