besides tiger barbs what fish can i keep as dithers with my sajica and blue severum bearing in mind they are only 1-2" in size? |

|
Dithers as in something for the larger fish to vent thier agression or hunting instincts on |

no to make them more brave like |

Just one further question though, why do want dither fish with chiclids that are on the whole peacefull, compred to other chiclid species, this makes no sence |

Dithers are used for fish that are shy. any fairly bold fish should do the job really. barbs like oddessas or similar would bwe good. rainbow fish etc. Bold gourmis like 3 spots would also be good.
Wymcot, you are thinking target fish, same thing different reason. Ihope they are not needed for inch long severums! |

my sevs and sajicas are really shy only coming out for food! so if i bought 6 oddessa barbs they could come out more? also if i bought diff types of the barbs would they group together |

With too many barbs, your chiclids will probably end up as the "dither fish" |
04-09-2006 16:08 by jonie
|
there 18 sevs (i counted anyway) and 23 sajica! |
04-09-2006 16:11 by wymcot
|
With that many they will probably be spending all thier time killing each other off when they start getting bigger. No time to worry to much about the other fish.
Why so many |

well i got the sajica of a freind who said he diidnt know where they where coming from (he had a wild pair)(had) nd the sevs cost me £50 as they R F1 and i want some to sell on for money
|

|
I could sell you some F1's or even wild caughts, although I've never had had them.
How would you ever know to be sure
Just be careful, £50 is a lot of money and youll be lucky to get it back. |

Just to clarrify the "dither/target" thing
For an example, Amercians suggest the use of dither fish in Malawi set-ups to divert the natural aggression of these fish, I wasnt aware of the other definition but I have always worked on the assumption that if fish are kept correctly and they are settled into thier environment, hunger will force them to feed eventually.
If the fish are new to the tank its no wonder they are still hiding.
Similary, if there are other, more boisterous fish in the tank, it can have the reverse effect and put them off feeding for longer |

Silver dollars make great dithers. |

Bruce, your obviously someone who knows what you talking about, especially after investing in a modern day "goldfish bowl" |

silver dollars in a 40gal |

Silver dollars are fine in a 40 gallon they generally top out at about 5" long you wouldn't need many 4 would be sufficient they are preedominantly herbivorous so do not produce vast quanitities of protein filled waste.
You could also consider distichodus affinis and congo tetras consider 6 the minimum for congos though otherwise they may well be timid themselves. |

Dither fish can do a good job of giving shy fish confidence. I'd go with Congo Tetra or Spanner barbs (or similar according to taste/room).
Don't knock Bruce for his Biorb although my Bowl45 is better as it's made of glass and the heaterstat and filter are in the roof. Platies and Vallis are the only inhabitants.
Here's a pic to prove it!

could i really keeps dollars in my rio 180? |

jonie, just my personal experience,i bought 6 2" dollars, put em in a 4ft with 6 1" cons[3 pairs] they were ok till the cons reached sexual maturity, then all hell let loose,so moved em into comm tank they were so skittish it stressed out all other fish, they seem to do better with med size non aggressive fish, they are also prone to banging into decor, which can + did lead to wounds on more than 1 occasion |

Just to add a little to the bowl debate the modern goldfish bowls with filters are absolutely fine plus they are usually pretty big at around 10 gallons.
However the historic view of goldfish bowls is half full of water no filter the later I disagree with strongly but what is wrong with a bowl shaped fish tank?
Incidentally public aquariums take advantage of the bowl shape for palagic fish displays as with a cylindrical design you have no corners for fish to go into as they would not know how to handle them. |
