if i move an established filter and put it on my new tank after its been running 24hrs am i right to think that the new tank with established filter will be mature striaght away.

no it will not be matured right away but the filter will certainly help the maturing procces it will help if you can add about 30% off a mature water in the tank

If your new tank water has not been dechorinated and there is still a residue of this left over, it can kill off some of your established bacteria.

In any case, what you have done is significantly reduced the time it will take to cycle your tank, but I'd still give it a couple of weeks just to be on the safe side

Kevin, I have allways done what you are suggesting without any problems, however I don't have a lot of fish so the stocking density would be low. I have found it the best way to start a new tank. I wish more shops would offer new customers "mature filter sponges" I find well colonised filters very hard to kill (except with antibacterial meds, MB stuffs them) I have kept them in a plastic bag with air and a small ammount of water for 24 hours without a problem. I beleive it is the easiest and most humane way to start a new tank

all i done was move my cannister filter of one tank and put it on my new set up which had already been running 24 hrs with a new cannister filter on it.

Moving the mature cannister does not automatically make the new tank mature.

Light stocking with non delicate fish should be OK but heavy stocking or delcate species is asking for potential trouble

i no that but it is a good start for the new tank to say the least.
