i have a rena tank (rena aqualife 120x40)and im thinking about getting a 3d background. (i know someone got one really cheap on here). but

1) the tank has large glass braces along the top (but they had fell off and he didnt have enough space and time to glue them back so when my mate gave me the tank i glued them back before setting it up. He said they were off for about 5 months (he only had the tank for 7 months)and no damage was done.

so i was wondering if it would be ok to take them off and leave them off. the tank holds 61 gallons (275 ltrs)

if not i was thinking off buying a wooden lid which fits over and around the glass and brace that.

does anyone know any good websites for the 3-d backgrounds?

thanks and sorry for the essay

The braces are there for a purpose and that is to restrict tank bowing..

Its a bit like taking the steering wheel out of your car cos it gets in the way

lol yea i surpose but it did last a while without.

but if i was to buy a wooden lid with side the go over the sid eof the tank therefore stopping the tank bowing as i would add braces in the lid

thanks anyway

With the water pressures in the tank a wooden lid would be no obstacle should the glass weaken.

Make life easy & have peace of mind for yourself.

If the struts are fitted, keep them fitted. Glass weakens with age as it become brittle so although in the short term you may get away with it, I wouldnt take any chances

ok thanks

im thinking of removing them then putting the background in get everythnig sorted such as airstones and pipes etc and glue it back in place like i did last time (so far its lasted 3 months whiches is more than before)

thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Chris i had the same thing happen with my rena tank, those glass pieces are there for support, if they are not fitted the tank will bow ( mine did ) i complained to rena and they sent me out another tank, the new tanks are much better designed, they have a metal alloy frame all around the top with a thin piece of alloy strip pop rivited in the middle from back to front. Believe me when i tell u this but your tank is not safe even when you put the supports back, the reason they have come off is because the front and back has prob bowed slightly and its pulled it away from the silicone supports.
If you complain to rena direct and say u bought the tank from new u will get a new one for free.

ref to backgrounds take a look at mine it cost 45 quid, and if you dont like the colour you can paint it yourself using acrylic matt paint. I can put you in touch with this old guy who makes them if u like

i dont have a reciept! what did they say?

where bouts is he? looks very gd for £45

at the moment i have found a back to nature background 2nd hand and the right size for my tank so if it fails i might go with the same one as yours

the tank isnt bowing atm as the lid sits on perfect but if they fall of again i will call them straight away

cheers

chris u dont need a receipt, but know some where that sells them like maidenhead aquatics, say u purchased it from them had it about 3 yrs and dont give in to the woman at reception she will pass u on to someone, whom in turn will give u new tank, heaters, filter and lights, believe it or not. To get there number u have to first complain in a shop like maidenhead and say u bought the tank from them, they wont do nothing but will give u rena s number. Trust me it works.
The back ground can be made to whatever measurements and the bloke can post them for 9 quid, he cuts them into 3 sections but they join up perfectly. his name is dave email him on dandeb315@yahoo.co.uk
He is retired and a very nice bloke to deal with.
Hope this all helps
