Posted My Discus (Malawi mad)

This my discuss set up, its now roughly 2 months old, fish have been in there approx 4 weeks or so, Considering i'm new to this plants and bogwood scene i feel i've done a pretty good job with this tank upto now, more plants of different colours are to added but i'm only just learning with the plants so not going to try anything reallyt delicate yet, so if anyone has any ideas of different plants which will suit the parimeters below let me know. I added an interpet straight forward simple co2 system at the weekend and since then the plants i added have turned a lovely green, my parimeters are:

PH 7-7.2
GH 6
KH 8

This was after a 30% water change.

This was as of last night, I have a straight forward internal juwel filter and an air driven filter box with peat extract rammed in it, in the juwel filter i have, Wool, sponge, carbon and also peat extract in there, I remember moaning a few weeks ago about the tint to the water, but its grown on me, the fish seem to love it!

and i now get the fish to eat flake and ZM's!

Only feeding twice a day now and every other day they have Beefheart at night (second feed of the day)

Well guys, what you think for a novice to discuss?

O yeh its a showtank mate, Same with the malawi tank, there both show tanks mate, Was thinking of javamoss on bogwood Going to order some off ebay today, when i bought these plants Johan they looked tired and worn out, but after 48hrs or so with the co2 running, wow it made such a difference!

Do you think i'm doing well mate?

Do the parimeters look ok?

Looks good, only thing with the Co2 is to be aware that CO2 will effect your PH, Gh & KH.

Well to be honest vu, its been stable since i added the co2 system, Its only an interpet cylnder (grey tube) with an air line then it goes into like a try which has runners on an angle, the co2 runs through this and then disperses into the water!

But i'll keep my eye on it, been checking daily since i added it and its remained stable, which is a good thing!

Great, just a precaution dude.
Also keep an eye on at night as the plants stop photosynthesis and will intake O2.

Its the fluation when this happens KH that needs watching. It prob. doesn't matter is the co2 is small. carry on the good work and enjoy.

Yeh its quite a small chmaber, but addequate for my tank, each cyclinder when filled lasts 30 days!

I dont feel its really required Kev to be honest, As well as that mate its the money situation...as all ways...

Bare in mind its only 125ltr this tank, I feel the juwel filter does it job, and does it well!

Its looking good malawimad, if i was you i stay away from the java moss, i was tempted by this stuff as everyone selling it said how easy it is to grow in any water conditions fast, but the reality is that it is very slow growing, needs almost still water if not its starts breaking up and getting tangled in your filter.
Like u i really fancied java moss, as i had the picture in my head of it covering everything in lush green moss. I really wouldnt waste your money. if you want plants on wood you be better off sticking to java fern and anubias.

Cheers Keith, Any advice/tips welcome, its all a learning curve for me at the min, but i'm doing well upto now, I'm doing that well i feel infact i'm considering selling the malawi tank so i can just get a bigger tank (400ltr) for the discuss, but the malawi tank is my other halfs baby, she loves that tank, where as now i feel myself going away from rocky tanks and starting to get to grips with the planted stuff!

i would stick to the 125 ltr for now, and get it nicely planted, A good substrate for plants is laterite under the gravel, i feel you will really benefit from this stuff. As laterite needs to be replaced at once a year i recommend doing plantpots rather than putting it in the bottom of the tank. This way you can add the laterite then your gravel then your plants in the pots and move them around for cleaning without disturbing the roots all the time. Much easier to maintain a planted tank this way. Get yourself an iron fertilizer. With the combination of co2, laterite and weekly doses of fertilizer, u will sure succeed in plant growing. Another good tip is to get heated cable or mat for under the tank as this will make your roots stronger, but this is a pain if you already set up your tank like i did. I struggled with plants for many years in my 400ltr set up due to the fact of cost of planting it to start with and providing co2 for that size. It really is not worth underplanting your tank, the more plants u have the better they r likely to grow. Stick with the 125 ltr set up. Ive only ever done well with plants in a smaller tank of up to 150ltrs.

Cheers for all the info Keith, You've given me plenty to think about...

I dont want it plated that heavey i cant maintain it (get to the substrated), I still want a good size of swimming space!

I'm sure more plants will be added this weekend, and of course pics will be uploaded and i will post my progress!

hi palit is evrybody to his own liking but best way for parameters is the wildhabitat where discus is coming from mine use to be ph6-6.50 and gh4 and kh 2 i believe it is the parameters to breed them and i had rams that bred on those parameters but with your tank stunning look and if the discus are happy keep up the good work maybe wise to invest in a ph controller when possible for nightime since you can add co2 and your ph will stay stable then. keep up good work
