In 1 of my lfshops, Rainbow Aquatics @ Mexborough, Rotherham..
He uses like little stone balls in a section which has been seperated from the main part of the holding tanks, I asked him what these stones we're and he told me 1 of his pals works on the railway lines and they use these balls as a base before setting new sleepers in for the new track, apparantly he's got loads of the stuff but he isn't prepared to sell any.....
Any idea what it could be? |

Scalpings DB?
These are like a swan shot size what he uses, Like a pea....
He uses nothing else filter wise, just these balls encased within another section of each tank!
What are scalpings ? |

Not sure what they are, but all it is is a biological filter media - Siporax or swimilar would do a better job. - But the theory is fine, thats all you need. A medium for bacteria to ive on - of course it is nice to have a sponge to filter out the big bits. |

Might be perlite not sure though having said that perlite would float for quite sometime as they are full of void space hence the quality of the media I would imagine.
Scalpings is a term often used in the Aggregate industry used to describe waste material from aggregate processing there is no fixed specific material chemically speaking that could be described as scalpings. |

Would these be the little clay balls that garden centres use for their hydroponic grown plants ( don't need soil) ? |

Hi,I think what you are asking about is lightweigh expanded clay aggregate,I use it to put at the base of tropical plants to provide moist air,it is usually imported from Germany but I cant rember the brand name |

Or roads darren MOT standing for ministry of transport type 1 this I believe is not good enough for railways. Don't quote me on that though it certainly is not scalpings, scalpings are a marketable waste product.
I think those clay ball things are called perlite not sire for certain. |
