22-09-2006 21:03 by sonia
|
why do want them to be more active jonie? i would advise to let them behave in their natural way rather than force them to act different pal |
22-09-2006 21:05 by jonie
|
no i ment to say fish that are active and interesting |
22-09-2006 21:13 by sonia
|
but you are trying to make your sevs and saj more active, they are only as active as they want to be jonie (as long as water quality is spot on) good luck |

i agree with sonia.making your fish move more when they dont want to could cause the fish stress |

I used silver tips as dithers with my american cichlids until they were big enough to feel confident on their own. How big's the tank? How many fish have you got? |

24-09-2006 10:05 by -Rob C-

when they grow your tank will be overstocked so i wouldnt add anymore fish |
24-09-2006 11:06 by jonie
|
there will be a 1 male 3 female sajica's and a male sev! NOT OVERSTOCKED! |
24-09-2006 11:27 by -Rob C-
|
there isnt gonna be space for any other fish in there. a tank that size seems abit small for a severum too |
24-09-2006 11:42 by jonie
|
it 18" high back to frontn top to bottom and its 40" long lol 40 gallon
|
24-09-2006 12:39 by -Rob C-
|
i know how big your tank is i just think a severum would be abit squashed in there. |

When your sajica pair off, the other two female will be way surplus. You could keep a pair of sevs with the sajica pair if your tank measurements are true. Build up a stack of boulders or such at one end for the sajica to breed. Sevs will spawn on any flat surface so create a territory for them at the other end. Sit back and enjoy. |

RETRY

what you think |

The tank is certainly big enough for a severum not sure about the sajicas never kept them but I believe they can attain a similar size not sure about how teritorial sajicas can be but being central american I imagine they can be extremely aggressive and territorial when paired.
As far as tank mates that you could put with the heros go any large tetras should be fine I have a shoal of 14 Congo tetras with my heros and he is fine with them I also have 3 distichodus affinis but he does squable with the largest affinis as I suspect he sees the fish as a threat to his territory but he does not bother anything in the tank that is half the size of him he does eye up my synos from time to time but nothing major.
I can see the attraction of getting a pair of sajicas but I suspect when you do no other fish that they would see as a threat to their territory would be safe. Again I suspect a shoal of Congos would be safe on the grounds they are to small to be a threat to territory and to big to be eaten.
Assuming you still propose to keep 1 sev and 4 sajica that is a theoretical total fish length of 113 cms.
Taking your word for it on the volume side of 40 gallons (I'm assuming imperial gallons) with big polluters like these I would go with a max stocking of 1" per gallon 113 cms of fish converts to about 44" so you would be nudging the limits for big polluters if you add in the territorial nature of cichlids I would agree that the tank would be over stocked.
I would suggest purely from a peace keeping point of view that you choose to keep either the heros or the sajicas not both and add to the mix a shoal of large tetras and a synodontis catfish and a plec perhaps and leave it at that.
Possible syno would be angelicus these are very robust syno's and look pretty good to boot.
Go for a really nice plec as well perhaps a good sized royal panaque or something like that. Don't go for the common plec or a gibbiceps your tank is not big enough to house one of these into adulthood.
Your tank looks good.
Very good choice of substrate and the use of bogwood will create a slight tanning of the water which the fish will benefit from greatly. Not sure about the shell though! |

One other thing are those plants real, if so as the heros grows it will absolutely demolish them I have never been able to keep plants not even java fern with a heros they just eat them. |
27-09-2006 22:32 by heros hero
|
the sajica are a much smaller cichlid in the mould of a convict but way less aggressive. If they breed, they'll want nothing within a foot of their fry and will team up against bigger fish to drive them off. Alan is dead right about the plants tho fella, sevs need vegetation in their diet and will destroy your plants. Please take the shell out! |

i dont think the shell will do any harm? |
27-09-2006 23:24 by heros hero

ain't about harm,it's about taste |

what type of plants in there jonie? |

Just as a side not on the Heros they would probably benefit from some seaweed from time to time.
Best way to do this is nip to your local supermarket and go to the asian/oriental food section in there you should be able to find a pack of seaweed sheets that are normally used for sushi. First bit of advice I've tried eating this stuff and it is not fit for human consumption it is disgusting secondly herbivorous fish love it and so do omnivores.
Just rip a strip off of one of the sheets (you won't need much as your sevs are small and fit it to a lettuce clip at first it will take a while for the sevs to twig it is food but when they do they will rip it to shreds my heros can't get enough of it and get through a couple of sheets a week if I let him.
Its really cheap stuff to so if they don't take to it there is no great loss I think from memory a pack of about 5 or 6 sheets costs 85 pence. They are a bit bigger than A5 size and are square not rectangular. |

or just throw in a lettuce leaf |

alan does this seaweed stuff contain salt? |
29-09-2006 09:39 by Alan
|
I believe it is boiled and dried so it will contain very little certainly not enough to cause harm to the fish as the salt will disolve almost instantly in the tank water and will be such a small amount you could hardly even describe it as a trace.
As the stuff is for human consumption it will have all the nutritional information on the pack incidentally I fed it to mbuna for years until I got bored of mbuna beat the living h@ll out of each other. |
