Just looking for some advice. Looking to up grade lighting on my marine tank so i can add some soft and hard corals at some point, as moving house not on the cards anymore. Currently running 4 T8 tubes. Tank is 39"W x 15.5"D x 19"H (water depth is 15")
Would 150w MH with 2 actinic tubes be ok (thinking of arcadia series 3 or similar). As a 4 tube T5 luminar is only 80 pound cheaper.
There is a 2" bracing bar right in the centre of the tank would this be a problem?
The missus doesn't like the idea of hanging it from the ceiling or me drilling holes in the wall for brackets. any ideas of how i could mount it above the tank if gifts and sweat talk don't work?

why not try a marine spec arcadia luminaire. you get 2 blue and 2 white T5 tubes - very brght.
the resting clamps are slideable. you just need 2 bracing bars (if you do not have them you can silicone 2 glass or perspex strips in place). |

of course, you would use the luminaires with an open topped aquarium. |

With a water depth of 15" T5's should be sufficient and as Yanton says they do not need to be hung from a ceiling or wall brackets.
If you went for metal halides I would be very concerned about how you would manage the heat from them I believe the surface of the bulb hits about 400 degrees celcius.
Either way the tank would have to be open topped. |

the plan was for open top. I was worried about heat too. I'll go with T5s 2white 2 blue? Would 4 be enough or should i try for as many as possible? |
