hi, we have just finished our 8x8 shed, & insulated it with 2" polysyrene from wickes , then finished it off with hardboard & insulated the ceiling with poly ceiling tiles, thats it!it holds the temp very well & is very stable.
we have heated it with an oil filled radiator, not individual tank heaters which would cost a fortune to run! the temp in the room is 28.5c & the temp in the tanks is: bottom row 24c, middle row is 25.5c & top row is 26.5c.
we are then running home made gravel filters ( little tubs filled with coral gravel, with an airstone & holes in the lids, great for kicking the ph up too!) which are so much cheaper to run, they run off a large 250 lph 20 outlet pump. all we have running in there is the heater, pump & a tube light when we need it!
we have 11 x 2' tanks for fry & 4 x 3' tanks for breeding.
i will post some photos later to give you some ideas.

thanks lisa. did u leave an air space between the shed wall and the polystyrene? i have a high blow that drives 42 airstones plan to use a combination of undergravel and box filters. i have 13 tanks in the house .. still not enough. mad eh!

lol.
no we didn't leave a space between, but we did leave a small 3" x 3" gap near the roof for ventilation that we can cover if need be, as we were concerned about condensation over the winter, but i was told that as long as you have good condensation covers fitted it shouldn't be a problem!
we had 10 tanks in the house, but have managed to cut it down to 6 now we have the fish house. yes we are mad lol!
how many tanks are you going to have in the shed? & what are you keeping/ breeding?
we have loads of malawis & tropheus breeding & babies in ours.

good another fish room , good size as well i think mine is 7-8 ft x 11-12ft x 6-7 ft tall , i found expanding foam was good for those annoying little gaps and under a fiver as well , you ve also got to take into account the summer overheating?

dannyboy thanks but im in aberdeenshire ,scotland .thanks for your info this whole thing has been driving me mad.i had lined it with both 25mm poly and glass wool. then some guy said oh u have to leave an air space and no glass wool.so all the hardboard came off and glass wool out poly moved then hardboard replaced ,then i was told you need a dpm. im sick of taking it to bits.I JUST WANT MY FISH HOUSE! so im doing nothing till i get more info from them thats done it.by the way the temp in the room without heating was 65dg. that was with glass wool. ta x

you dont need to damp proof a shed the timber is already treated. so forget that.. (i used to be a builder) as for the air theres a certain amount of truth in that as the air traps the heat and keeps the area warmer but the wool holds the air and heat even better. so i would have left that in there. really your main concern is that damp wont set in as it will be a damp area. just insulate the room the best you can

danny boy, would you suggest a dehumidifier to absorb the moisture in the air. bet your thinking what a stupid woman eh . lol
26-09-2006
14:11 by Danny Boy
well a dehumidifier is gonna work over time as it'll be removing water from the tanks too. lids are definantly essential to save condensation. it couold be an idea to have a dehumidifier on one or two days a week maybe? but id be guessing as i dont have any experience.. and how comes your a lady but have ZZR passion?...

what size do they start to breed do you know?
flowerpots sound a good idea too

Brichardi's in my experience dont grow very quick, but i think they hit maturiy at around 2-3", not 100% but my friends have bred them at that size

yip my pair bred at 2' but im having a few probs.all the info i have read states that the young can stay with the parents until 8mth.i have had 3 litters from them but despite what the books say about the oldest young helping look after the new fry. when a new batch hatch and r about 3wks the male goes off and starts chewing the oldest babies and spitting them not killing them but the stress eventually kills them ? anyone else got this prob. i keep moving the young out when it starts again

Hi, you could fit a small exstractor fan at the the top of the apex pluged into a timer to come on every 15 minutes in every hour to help with the humidity,
I was lucky when building my fish hut the place where i work are using this

It is used on the houses in Glasgow got all I needed for nothing also added 1"inch of rockwool on top then covered with 4mm Plywood this was then painted used emulsion to seal wood grain then used gloss paint

I think that a waterproof membrane on the inside of the insulation is essential. without this water vapour will condense behind the insulation and provide ideal conditions for fungal growth. The water will perculate back into the fish house through joints in the insulation bringing fungal spores with it! Trust me, you do not want to be breathing this stuff!

I see you are selling your shed and everthing in it on ebay hope you get a good price, for all your time and effort
