hmm sounds like a good idea but you have competition. i would think you would need to buy in massive bulk to make any profit as you would loose a lot of fish but also need to house a hell of a lot of fish.. then you'd need to be supplying many many fish shops.. so i would doubt you'd do any better than breaking even after the first two yrs of buissness. the water bills would be huge.. the electricity even more so. i do know that if you buy in from asia you pay maybe a few pence per fish and sell them on at 10-20pence a fish so theres a profit to be made but only if you go in at massive bulk buying.

im talking about marine fish as ive been looking at prices on import lists compared to shop prices, flame angels £60 in my local shop, on lists about £8.50 if you say got together a few people willing to get an order together and split the cost of shipping then you save ££££££

NIGE MORE TO IT THAN THAT 8.50 YES BUT ONCE YOU ADDTHE FREIGHT , PACKING , MARINE TAX , DELIVERY CHARGE AND VAT THAT FISH WILL COST YOU 20.00, THEN YOU HAVE TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT STORING THEM ,QUARINTINE, FEEDING , SALT ELECTRICITY , WAGES , B4 YOU KNOW IT THAT FISH WILL OWE YOU 35.00 AND HOW MUCH YOU GOING TO SELL IT FOR 50.00? YOU MADE 15.00 THATS IF IT LIVES, GOOD LUCK ANYWAY

sounds like a headache Nigel to me, you prob better off just enjoying it as a hobby rather than financial opportunity mate

I think allot of people have beaten you to importing fish. It will be very difficult to establish a new business in this field. yes there are more people going into marine, but the shops selling fish will have importers that they know and trust to provide high quality goods and will not want to be changing easily.
Best of luck though if you decide to give it a go.

If you were doing freshwater it would be a whole different ball game and as Danny boy said unless you had use of a warehouse and hundreds of tanks it would not be viable but marine is slightly different.

First off are you based in London if you are its a problem as the person I am suggesting you contact for advice may not be to happy about the competition plus as he is mail order I doubt he will be to happy if you are anywhere near London.

Having said that he is a top bloke and is running his business as an extension to the hobby.

His name is Hassan and he can be contacted through this website under the marine invert adds at tropical reefs or you can go through his website.

http://www.tropicalreefs.co.uk/

I imagine he would be happy to impart some advice and quote from experience etc especially if you were going to buy something from him.

thanks alan, ill contact him, im based in lincoln so a long way away, im not looking for financial gain, just to save other hobyists (and myself) a few quid. my imports would only be small ampunts however other than shipping there will be very little overheads as its part of my hobby (tanks, salt and electricity)
