pond pump and filter |

heres a daft question to most of you when the weather gets colder is it wise to switch my bioforce filter and pump off or shal i cover it so it doesnt freeze its my first winter keeping koi last year it was goldfish so i just turned them off also what is the best way of cutting back lillies after they have died off ?? much help and advice would b much apprieciated  |

keep the pump/filter running....insulate with old carpet or straw if conditions get realy bad
as for the lillies they grow each year from the tuber/roots.......so i would cut them right back

theres no advantage to turning your filter ogff that will kill all the bacteria that your water needs. also dont forget as the temp drops to cut back feeding. im not to up on it all so you'll have to find the info on the net but im certain coldwater fish lower the metabolic rate when its cold so dont need much if any feeding. |

you're quite right danny,if the temp outside drops enought the pond fish will just sit on the bottom,they do lower their metabolic rate so as you say dont need much if any feeding! as for the filter/pump, can you not build a small box to cover it + insulate with poly or similar? |

Like the others have said,keep the pump & filter running all year round.
When the temp drops below 18 c change their feed to wheatgerm,
Below 4 c stop feeding.
