would it be ok if i used a metal halide out door light and put in a 20000k buld for my marine tank |

it depends on the starter, but reading your other thread about using mh and changing all your t8 to blue a 20000k mh lamp is very blue any way, i would think about a mid range one of 14000k and a 10000k is a yellow/white spec. as i said it depends on the starter gear for the lamp you use. |

itwont work as the 20000k needs a starter to start it up due to the amps it pull at startup might work a while but it will crunch the light unit with on off all the time thats why they are so expensive to buy they know they got us at the .......... |

i mean the buld i was thinkingof getting give this effect in the picture below .. the picture is tanken of a tank with the bulb im thingking of buying in...

so with the tank being this colour with the bulb do you thing i shud use this buld with 3 marine white and 1 blue t8 tube.. or can i jst use this bulb for all day use and not have any other t8s or another mh bulb |

The key is the starter being the correct type otherwise the bulb can go off spectrum and emit uv light, the other thing is to be sure the floodlight has an auto cut out in case of over heating you have to remember the surface of a MH bulb can hit around 400 degrees c.
I'm recalling this from memory as there have been debates on this forum that I have contributed to in quite some detail so I would do a search for MH lighting.
Ballast wise the ballast must be a sodium ballast not a mercury ballast it is the mercury ballast that will not function correctly take a look at www.marine-lighting.co.uk for aqua bays |
