hi nick sorry to bud in but more advice on extarnal filter i did read they are not recommended for marines altough i have one does it actually add nitrates to your tank? |

i should have said before it depends on thats in the filter, if it,s floss, sponge or anything else that collects waste it will add nitrates anless you clean it every 2-3 days, the only thing i use mine for is phosphate remover

is a sump similar or are they better than an external filter? |

a sump would be a 1000 times better, a sump will help get rid of nitrates if it has cheato or something like that in it, also you can put all your equipment in there, do water changes, and add any suppliments ect tin the sump

Sump is only better if you set it up as a miracle mud filter or DSB do not go for a sump with a trickle filter as that is even worse than a canister. The problem with conventional filtration is that it only breaks down ammonia and nitrite and produces nitrate. With the natural methods the waste is removed before nitrate is produced therefore nitrate remains low to nil my nitrate level is always at 0 mg/l and I use no artificial filtration. |

Natural is still best with fish only systems coupled with a huge skimmer you will have more nitrate problems in a fish only system than in a full blown reef and with a 140 litre tank the instability would be far greater in a fish only run on artificial methods.
sorry to bat on about this just don't want to see you make a costly mistake and lose fish.
All you need is the following:
Strong lighting T5 or MH
Pumps to citrculate the water 20 times plus total volume an hour
Live rock equal to 1 kilo for every imp gallon of tank capacity
Sprinkling of live sand no deeper than 1 inch put in the tank after the live rock so the live rock is partially buried.
Skimmer slightly over rated for the tank. TMC V2Skim should do it in its hang on guise. The smallest one would be sufficient.
Also consider a small canister filter to run through a uv sterilizer and to house a phosphate remover no other media would be needed.
This will work for a reef and fish only.
Other equipment you would need would be as follows:
Test kits:
Nitrite
Nitrate
ph
carbonate hardness/alkalinity
calcium
magnesium
phosphate
Refractometer
Decent salt the best is TMC pro reef well worth the additional cost I opted for reef crystals instead of pro reef last time I bought salt as it is cheaper and is a market leader but it is not a patch on TMC pro reef.
RO unit with either a built in TDS meter or a hand held to enable the performance of the RO unit to be tested.
In all budget about £600 for the marine set up if you have the tank and cabinet already.
Skimmer I suggest is about £90
vecton v2 is about £80
Lighting if T5 £100 poss more
Live rock fromm STM is about £9 per kilo you need about 15 kilos in total so £135 ish
Cheap canister filter go for an eheim classic about £40
Salt £59 for 25 kilo bucket
Refractometer £39
Total £543 plus test kits about £600 consider this the bare minimum I have skimped in the past to my cost it really is not something worth doing with marine I know this all sounds expensive but after this initial outlay the hobby is not much more expensive than specialised tropical fish such as freshwater rays and the like.
