Is there any truth that carbon filters will promote "hole in head disease" ??? and a few breeders tell me that a dominant discuss will release a hormone that stunts smaller discuss in same tank ... and you should change water daily because of this ...either statement true??? |

think the large water changes is more to do with getting shot of the Nitrate's
not sure about the statments .....where did you get this information from?
if breeders tell you this there must be something in it ???? |

have heard the hormone thing a few times and reckon there's some truth in it. When you raise a batch of fry, 1 always seems to grow faster than the others, remove it and another one starts to put on size. |

Have heard about the hormones thing too but the carbon theory sounds stupi.d.
The only thing I can think of is that if you don't change the carbon regularly it will leach back and cause water quality problems.
Its normally best to have lots of WC for Discus to maintain water quality unless you are an experience keeper. |

It is not hormone buy Pheromones that are released by the fish. Similar, but different. Lots of stuff on the web on these.
Yes water changes (not nessesaryly daily, but regular) will help.
But with discus it is usually bullying both active and passive that causes the problems, In any group of discus you will get dominant fish, the submissive ones will get to food less quickly, so grow less and also be passively intimidated by the presence of dominant fish.
With discus you really need a minimum of 6 fish to avoid having serious problems, but even with 6 some will be smaller than the others.

The carbon thing is a bit tenuous. Apparentley some sam that carbon may remove some essential minerals, and that this leads to an increased occurance of the disease....
unsure about this one. |

Hi paddy
Thats very interesting and I think you are right. It now makes sense to me.
I read that some Discus Breeders add some particular Vitamin to cure Hole in the Head. From this I reckon that the carbon not only removes all the rubbish its suppose to but also various minerals and vitamins.
Quality carbon is good in the short term but long term I don't think people should be using it. |

I never use carbon with any fish it is pointless unless you are removing medication its exhausted within a couple of days anyway. |
