my nitrates are sky high every thing else is as normal ,i did get a load of xenia off a mate and some did dye off as i have seen the odd bit lying in the sand im just wondering if this is the reason for the nitrate?

as jake says how high is high, and on marine you can get ZERO nitrate, as far as our test kits go. i cant see a problem with the xenia , how old is your test kit?

Dos ome daily water changes and if it's a new tank add, a old filter for some bacteria

Bruce I would disagree with you suggestion adding additional filtration would jusrt produce more nitrate.

Gavster what is your set up give a full over view of equipment stock and live rock if possible.

Incidentally my reef is run on an eco method and my nitrates at there highest hit 5 ppm and this is just after I have trimmed back the algae in my algae scrubber the norm of 0 ppm.

The dead coral is a distinct possibility.
