We catch all our brooding females in a net but don't take them out of the water, then we have an ice-cream tub in the water and place her gently in it, still in the net, then remove the tub from the tank with about 5-6inches of water in.
We then hold her in 1 hand still in the water and we use a soft plastic pipette (the type you dose out fish meds with) and gently hold her mouth open with the tip and use a backward & forward motion to flush the water through her mouth and gills - the little ones swim out and she gets put back in the tank she was in and fed straight away.
We found that by not taking them out of the water meant they didn't swallow them in a panic.
Though saying that we bought some Caerulus last week and found 1 of them was holding when we got home.... |

if you just hold the mum upside down and only slightly squeeze her mouth she will release them but you should only do this if you are transferring to another tank, let her release on her own. |
