Posted Fluval 05 series

I've been looking all over the net for information on the 05 series fluval canister filters, but they seem to be too new to find reviews on. I just ordered a 205 for my 60l tank. I know it sounds like overkill but I'm going to try and run a filter system based on this setup from

http://www.hdltd.com/products/p_rightnow.html

I need to turn over the tank at least 6 times an hour and the 105 didnt have quite enough flow to do it.

anyone have experience with the 05's?

the fx5 is far too big for a 60l tank a 501 will be more than adequite for a 60l tank i once had a 205 on a 70l tank it it kept the tank spotless the fluval 5 series is only fluval newest series of filters altough there is not much difference between the 5 and 4 series and for fluvals pricerange they are good we know eheim is king but for the money you pay i would stick with fluval as they have a better inlet and outlet system for their filters and had 5 fluvals at one time and one eheim and at end off day they do the same job to keep nitrates down now i did away with all extarnals and only use sulpherbeads wich do away with space and half the price to get and run

I know Eheim is reputed to be the best, but I'm a bit skint at the moment so I have to take what I can afford. I liked the internal schematic for the fluval, it seems to be a very good design. I'm sure many people have had bad experiences with fluval's older models but that doesn't necessarily mean that I will have problems. In the future when I have more money, i'll be getting a bigger tank and better filter anyway. I got this tank setup from the local pet store. Its a tetra tank kit, its rather nice for what it is, but the internal power filter it comes with isnt very effective and is absolute *** when it comes to bio-filtering space so i wanna bin that filter and get a real filter I'm getting the spray bar for it so I dont totally freak out the fish with the outflow, will be good to spread that power out a bit.

I'm also hoping with the spray bar that I may be able to set up a nice current at the bottom to keep food and poo from settling so it can get filtered out...

In all, I think the media volume for the size of the tank will be amazingly high so I should be able to handle a good bio-load with it. Right now, even though my tank isn't overstocked according to my fish expert, I just dont have the surface area to grow my bacteria on

If your skint go for an eheim classic they don't have the flow rate of the fluval but the have the build quality to last decades if the 04 series is anything to go buy at best you will get a couple of years trouble free service out of the 05 then all hell will break loose watych for warping of the impellor housing one other thing of not is the means of attaching the motor to the bottle on the 04 it was terrible I had a 404 that flooded my lounge replacing the gasket did nothing to stop it hence I binned it it was more trouble than it was worth. You would be able to get an eheim classic for less than the fluval o5 series if you went on the internet try surrey pet supplies.

Agree with Alan on this, eheim is the way forward.

yes, but I've already ordered it, its too late to change it to something else. Thats why I want to know experiences people have with the 05 series. I know Eheim is widely accepted as the best, but for the money, I found that the Fluval holds more variety of media, has higher flow, has more time passing through the media than the Ehiems i've seen at the same price.

For my filter setup as mentioned above, I have to turn the water over 6-10 times an hour. I'm anxious to see the result of this tri-carbon and "Right now" bacteria. It could be a total flop, but either way, i'll end up with lots of bio surface compared to the little power filter that came with my tank...yuck...

By the time my Fluval goes bad, i'll be on to bigger and better tanks anyway, and when I can afford that, i'll be getting a better filter anyway

Go for eheim media over the fluval stuff it is far superior.

I suspect the internal design of the 05 is as near as d@mn it identical to the 04 so you will have sponges first in a horizontal position with 2 or 3 baskets next to it. To maximise filter surface area fill these with ehfi substrat pro each litre of this media has a surface area of about 450 m2 if I recall quickly way above anything else on the market.

I here what you are saying about flow rate this is an area were the fluvals do excel I tend to be very negative about them due to past experience but you should get a couple of years trouble free but watch for the points I made above the design of the 05 is very similar to the 04 so it may have the same eventual problems.

One thing of note about the eheims is their media capacity it is far greater than that of the fluvals as there is no wasted space. All I do with external is fill them with ehfi substrat and then clean them monthly keeps the flow rate high.

Just out of curiousity what have you got planned that requires this high water turnover?

Also had a look at that link I'm a bit dubious to be frank you would be better off aquaring some filter media from a mature set up some shops will sell this to you.

There is also a new tetra product that purports to do the same I think it is called easy start. PFK did a test on it and weren't that impressed no fish were lost but the tank went through the full maturation process but much quicker.

What fish do you intend to keep?
