27-10-2006 10:18 by OLD MAN

27-10-2006 11:00 by -Rob C-
|
and yes they do make good discus tank mates, it i had a bigger tank i would keep them. but obviously a breeding pair may cause problems. apparently they eat plants though. |
27-10-2006 11:29 by Bogwoodbruce
|
Yeah they do eat plants, my uncle had a pair in a planted tank and they ate all the plants that he had spent a fourtune on. |
27-10-2006 11:31 by RyanR

They can vary in price. For the normal species Uaru amphiacanthoides (the one in your pic) a fair price is about £6.95ish for 1-2" youngster. And for 5-6" I suppose from £15 ea to £25 is probably fair depending on the source, Personally I would have thought up to $50 would be not unexpected, if there is no proof that they have spawned if the form of photos or fry, they may not be a breeding pair - 2 females can produce infertile eggs.
if they are imported or bought from a wholesaler they may not be cheap, and ocassionally you do see silly prices asked for them.
They will grow to 15" but are wimps, best by themselves but discus are worth a shot, they eat a lot of vege matter though, so no plants.
They do have the common names Waroo and triangle cichlids, but in the UK most people just know them as Uaru. |
27-10-2006 12:54 by kingie11
|
hi old man
most common (ones in your pic)
are uaru amphiacantoides breeding pair probably £40 is depending on age
other very rarely seen in the hobby uaru fernadezyepezi breeding pair probably £200 - £250 |
27-10-2006 12:59 by kingie11
|
hi again go to the wanted adds do a search on uaru there are both types for sale |
27-10-2006 15:01 by Bogwoodbruce
|
Uaru are compatable with angels, festive cichlids and discus. I know somebody who had the different species together in a 5 footer. |
27-10-2006 15:25 by OLD MAN
|
SO I CAN ALSO PUT FESTIVE CICHLIDS WITH MY DISCUS?
IM WELL UP FOR BUYING THE PAIR OF UARU BUT THE SELLER IS A NIGHTMARE TO GET HOLT OFF. |
27-10-2006 16:23 by Bogwoodbruce
|
Yeah festives are the most peaceful cichlid i've ever had.
|
27-10-2006 16:27 by PaddyD
|
They should be ok, in a good size tank, but I have never tried it before. The main issue will be territory though A pair of uarus may well need a good 3-4 feet of tank space - does not leave a lot of room for the rest of them. Be prepared to move fish as you get them pairing off really. |
27-10-2006 16:35 by OLD MAN
|
WELL THESE ONES HE SAYS ARE A BREEDING PAIR.
THEY ARE 5" AND 4"
THEY ARE IN A 6FOOT TANK WITH DISCUS.
I WANT TO PUT THEM WITH DISCUS IN MY 4 FOOT TANK. |
27-10-2006 17:05 by Bogwoodbruce
|
I think they will be fine as uarus are very peaceful and aren't really agressive. |
27-10-2006 17:31 by marko
|
Well my mate had a breeding pair of like 10 inch long uarus and when he tried to sypthon out the wrigglers the male bit his arm and my mate said it was like a pair of pliers clenching his arm,he showed me the scare so i think if they r breeding be prepared for some beaten up discus cause i have 7 discus and i dont think any of them could put up a fight even to the female uaru |
27-10-2006 17:58 by OLD MAN
|
MARKO, THAT IS THE ONLY CASE I CAN FIND ANYWERE ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB ABOUT THEM BEING AGRESIVE. EVERY ONE YOU SPEK TO SAYS THEY ARE RIGHT LIL WIMPS. |
27-10-2006 18:17 by marko
|
But remember he couldve just had extreamly aggro uarus...some fish r just mental
I think u should try it,u never know unless u try |
27-10-2006 18:45 by darren
|
Personally i would'nt mix the two species in a 4 foot tank, especially a breeding pair, you may get away with it with a single female but nothing else
Just my opinion |
27-10-2006 18:47 by paul stevens
|
I say stick to guppies and neons... |

THE THING IS THAT THIS BLOKE HAS THESE FISH WITH DISCUS!
HE SAYS THEY HAVE NEVER EVER BOTHERED THE DISCUS IN HIS TANK. |
27-10-2006 23:22 by curviceps
|
Uaru amphiacanthoides are peaceful fish, however they can hold their own against more aggressive SA's. Although the guy has them in with discus, I'd be wary of doing the same. I'd agree with Paddy D, unless they have produced fry, I never take the buyers word that they are a pair, females often help each other to get rid of eggs when no male is present. |
28-10-2006 09:51 by Bogwoodbruce
|
I wonder why he's getting rid if they live fine with discus. It makes you wonder. |
