i have a 50 gallon Malawi setup with about 50 fish. Sand substrate.
I use an Aqua One cannister filter but would like to supplement this with another smaller cannister.
My question is: will any filter work if it is placed ABOVE the tank?
Most I have seen are set up below the tank, but I can only place filter on a shelf above tank.

Please advise.

when u do filter maintenance you wont be able to prime the filter, as the filter need to be below for water to run back into it to be able to refill it with water. not sure if filter will have trouble running when filled or not as never tried it.
Also i have a 100 gallon with 30 malawis, i think yours may be a little over stocked.

You can't have a filter above the tank. It just won't work.
