Just found this from samy.
my puffer has just started eating again after going on a hunger strike for 2 weeks. he looks alot better than he did when he was ill.
THANKS TO ALL THE PEOPLE ON THE FORUM WHO GAVE ME GOOD ADVICE. IN THE END IT ONLY TOOK A BIT OF TONIC SALT TO CLEAR HIM UP!
See if i can find the rest.

I cant find that one about samy's puffer.
But ive found this from alan sure he wouldnt mind me pasting this up.
Others need very hard water if it is an mbu puffer you need a ph of around 8.2 and the water needs to be very hard.
They are also very sensitive to high nitrates what filters do you have.
Can you post all your water parameters and assuming the test kits are accurate (always debatable on the basis of my recent experience) we will advise accordingly sadly prepare for the worst though when fish get to this stage it is often to late to remedy. |

No disrespect to alan but mbu's dont really require a pH of 8.2, most are found in the wild in the congo right through to lake tang (I think) therefore most are in the river where the water is soft. They seem to do best with a pH around 7 but adapt well but only to pH. They however will not tolarate high nitrates, ammonia and nitrites.
50% weekly water changes are well advised..
Nelly, sounds to me as if he has air trapped inside him..? Is he well apart from being unbalanced?
Suspect when you moved him you took him out of the water when really they shouldnt be exposed to air.....? |

you could try by testing your nitrate and make sure u have enougth filteration and airation in your tank! and like jake said they do need large water changes to keep everythink under control.
you can try and add a bit of tonic salt to the tank wait 2 days and do a water change and then add another dose and after 2 more days he should be alright. thats how i saved my mbu puffer!! |

Dont really know, try looking on the puffer forum.
Could try holding him facing upright and the air might come out. If not im sure he'll expell it on his own at some point.
In future never take him out the water, always scope them up in container. |

Anyone that knows puffer shouldnt. Dont think the smaller species suffer from it much.

Thanks all, checked this morning and swimming alittle better but not right yet,if i touch him he goes mad swimming around so could be trapped air or stress, like i said im not really a novice in puffer fish as kept them successfully for well over 3 years,i do know your not suppose to take them out of water, and i know my water parameters, just never seen this in a puffer unless its dead!!!!!!or dying. Many thanks all |

I,ve seen the same problem on the puffer forum. Apparentely you have to burp them underwater(no joke). This involves holding them face up and squeezing them in an upwards motion. Never fancied doing it and all i can say is good luck! |

Nelly. Any chance you can give me some advice on my wee puffer...sounds like you know what you're talking about?! - what can you keep puffers with? Ive done the research and it seems to be 'puffer-dependent' on whether they will tolerate other fish at all, regardless of the species...but my tank looks so bare!!! |
