recon your right PaddyD,or poss Hongi red top, seems to have a long head shape |

|
I THOUGHT IT WAS A RED TOP HONGI |

Possibly hongi, but the body seems a bit long for the hongi.
Matthew, how big is the fish, Most hongi top out at about 3" and males have quite a 'full' head at this size. While greyshakei do get to 5" on average.
Yours looks like a young fish to me, so if it is 3" or so it probably is not a hongi.
Compare these two photos:

Hiya paddy neither of the pics look like it it has more of an orangy body it is still young and is about 4in long |

|
Well, that rules out Hongi to me.
Greyshakei is very variable though, have a look on the web for more.
The other posibility is a variety of red top zebra. But there are lots of these, some could have all sorts in their genetic mix so its not a rock hard identification. Again do a google seach - but most have very strong verical banding. |

|

Yup Ice blue zebra and red top sebra are trade names. Lovely fish but can be large (up to 7" is not unknown). |

it may be a Greshaki but have you noticed how prominant the vertical bars are on its body, the bars on Greshaki tends to be virtually non existant on the young. i think another picture of a side view would narrow this down. |

|
I've kept malawi cichlids for years, the mouth gives it away, poor breads of greshaki will show very little bars, this is a cracker and 100% Psuedtrhphius greshaki, i'll put my balls on it! |

I think some better photos would help, but got to be honest when I first saw the pic hybrid sprang to mind, there are a lot of these around,it would help if the parents were known.I keep both species and looking at them now, neither really match the pic. |

he is the male and i have a female that is similar |
03-11-2006 16:27 by Ray
|
It is not a Hongi,so would go for Greshakei, the only other species that I can think of that looks similar is Mbenjii, but they are not seen very often |
03-11-2006 16:36 by keith t
|
Ryan - i'll put my balls on it!
that means nothing mate, you put your balls on-in anything, |
