Oranda standing on head |

Hi. I have a Orando in my tank and over the last week and half he is always standing on his head. By this i mean his head is always down and tail upright. At 1st I thought it was the airstone that was the problem and the current was to strong, not abling itself to level up. But I have a smaller fantail who seems to manage fine? I reduced the size of the airstone to the smallest but no difference. The other fish dont do this. Apart from that its very healthy and eating fine. Any ideas to what it could be please? |

look in the classified section for bloodworm + loads of it on ebay, lot cheaper than the shops although it does mean buying it in larger quantities |

sounds to me like a case of Swim Bladder Disorder to me.
The swim bladder is an air-filled organ which the fish uses to balance itself and swim up and down by regulating the pressure inside. If the airbladder becomes compressed, deformed or diseased the fish cannot regulate it and therefore 'loses its balance'. Fancy goldfish frequently suffer due to their compressed body shape.

At 1st i thought it might be swim bladder but he swims normal, its only when he stops moving he is head down. He isnt tilted to a side, or floating at top, stuck at bottom nor is he upside down.
I dont think its swim bladder. |

There are 2 reasons for a fancy goldfish doing this:
1 - poor diet resulting in constipation and trapped wind usually caused by a dry food diet.
This can be remedied with a varied diet that includes some vegetable matter as well as frozen foods like bloodworm and daphnia. The later form part of a wild carp diet and therefore are ideal foods.
2 - Swim bladder problem.
Generally there is no cure for this although there are remedies on the market that may help.
Both problems are caused by the breeding of the extreme body shape this results in overly contorted organs that often fail to function correctly. This being the reason I do not advocate the keeping of fancy goldfish as I do not advocate the breeding of dogs such as bulldogs as the breeding is so extreme it often results in long term suffering for the animal in the case of bulldogs continually running eyes difficulty in walking and breathing problems with the goldfish you get diet related problems more readily as the gut is cramped as well as swim bladder problems as the swim bladder is cramped plus they do not exactly swim very well.
I'm sure these comments will attract some condemnation as they often do but this is just my opinion. |

Hi, thanks. Well they havve a varied diet of including peas and lettuce and spinach as well as fish dry food. I was only giving them 2 of the above a week, rest of week dried fish food. Upon advice on here Ive given more peas and noticed a little improvement for 2 days. Today he has gone back to standing on head but worse than before. Though he swims fine still and other than this is very healthy colour all fins up and eating great. I managed at last to get some frozen blood worm today and given them that this afternoon, wow they love it and the orando importicular went crazy for it. I have over the last week been using swim bladder treatment along with the salts.
Out of curiosty it ouldnt be the tank size could it? there in a 10 gal tank until saturday, propelry filtered and airiated with regular water change. My other tank got badly cracked 9 days ago and oddly enough this is when this started to happen so I wondered if its cause this tank is so small?
Im getting a little worried now even though he is still active. I phoned the shop I got him from for advice and they said swimbladder, they also had never heard of them getting trapped wind. Though it was a young girl in at time and the actual fish people werent there.
Out of ideas on what to do. Ive fed the blood worm at 4pm so will see if that will make a change. If not it will be to see how he goes when new tank arrives and is ready to use.
What is daphnia? never heard of that before. |

If it is trapped wind you will see big bubbles in the poo when it finally comess out it is a symptom of constipation and poor diet but by the sounds of it the diet is fine.
Daphnia are water fleas not really sure what else to say about them other than that.
How frequently do you feed them? I would suggest starving them for a few days to see if this helps. I still wouldn't rule out a bowel problem but it is sounding like it is a swim bladder problem.
Providing the fish is healthy aside from the obvious swim bladder issue it should be fine I do not think the smaller tank would have caused this but perhaps the stress of relocation may have triggered the problem. Is there much of a temperature difference with this tank compared to the last one? Also does the temp fluctuate significantly more than before? |
09-11-2006 10:12 by AndreaC
|
The temp is the same and i have a thermometor to kkep check. Ive not seen no fluctuation. Maybe it could be the tank swap that has caused the problem and upset it though the others are all fine. When I swapped the tanks I used the same gravel, water and pump etc... all transfered over. I get my new tank saturday and it will all be transferred back so its not a fresh start but I know the actual moving them can cause stress. There has been no bubbles in the poo but saying that I havent actualy seen that fish poo! that and another fish. I put it down to bad timing on looking at them though I do spend alot of time observing them and watching them, even more so since he has been doing this.
Now today his behavour is different again. He isnt standing on head as much again but is swimming round the tank alot faster. Orandos are supposed to be slower swimmers arent they? He doesnt seemd stressed and he isnt bullied by any other fish. Infact im amazed that the whole tank get on real well togehter. My largest Goldfish is like daddy of the tank. He seems to swim round making sure there all ok lol.
I cant wait to get proper sized tank up and running agin TBO, I hate to see them in a small tank.
I feed them once or twice a day. Would starving them the whole tank be ok? Never done that before as I thought they might die!

In general medium to large fish can go without feed for 2 weeks no problem and thats tropical fish sometimes fish starve themselves for months with no ill effects give it 3 or 4 days no food and see if that helps unless the fish are very small or are low in weight. |

Thanks for all the advice. I havent fed them today and will leave it now and feed them again on sunday, giving them a 2 day break. 1 fish is quite small (fantail) so will not do more than 2 days, though there not low in weight.
Thanks again for advice, |
