Tank is 50 gallon.

Please can you advise the best external filter that will take care of an overcrowded Mbuna setup.

I would use 2 externals, the bigger the better. Its always best to go over the top. on my 400ltr set up i run 2 x rena xp3. one filled with biological media and the other with sponges rowaphos and plenty of filter wool. I found the rena filters very good. Though loads of peeps will recommend eheim filters to be the best.
The idea is to have as much biological filteration as poss to cope with the extra waste from an overstocked tank. Mbuna are not known to be the tidiest of fish and are quite messy.
I also have on the same set up a vecton 25w uv sterilizer and looking into adding a nitrate filter at some point, but still researching them.

fluval fx5 without doubt - superb filter

fluval fx5 on a 250 litre tank?Little over the top don't you think? 405 would get it done as would the tetratec 700 or 1200. Folk rave about eheims but they are a bit like 80s vw golfs, you get a very good one or one that constantly fails.

fluval fx5 was suggested because the tank was mentioned as being crowded, so with a heavy bio-load.

I would go for 2 externals if you can each being 7-800 LPH or more. Up to you on which brand you like - Tetra/fluval/eheim will all be pretty good.

steve, when you say foam, do you mean the media?

no m8 the foam round the media.. bit of a pain to clean out... as it means taking the baskets right out to clean thats all.
