Sick Cichlid |

Hello,
I have what I think is a sick
Dimidiochromis compressiceps
(Malawi Eye-biter) He is about 7 inches long and was just starting to display his adolescent colours. However he has not eaten for around 6 days and has lost his colours and now has long white faeces trailing.
I have tried all types of frozen, pellet and flake food but nothing tempts him. He used to take a whole cube of frozen food in one go!
Would anyone like to hazard a guess as to what could be wrong? Internal parasite? Intestinal infection?
And how do I treat it?
Thanks. |

sounds like bloat, try getting some octozin and follow the instructions |

the long white faeces bit puts it off m8, google hexamita, go to your vets and ask for the medications they recomend (metronodizol i thik?) |

You need to act quickly because sooner or later the fish will end up laying on the bottom breathing like crazy . because the parasites have eaten through the stomach wall and are attackng the internal organs .at this stage you dont have much hope of saving the fish.once again act quickly |

Phil you was saying that he used to eat a whole cube of frozen food...?
1) Dont give your fish any frozen food still frozen as this can do them some harm by getting icicles stuck in the throat or piercing the stomach.
2) have you been feeding them bloodworm atall...? as this is not good for malawi's it gives them malawi bloat.

Thanks for all replies everyone!
just got in from work fed fish but he's still not eating!
Richard. i too thought perhaps bloat due the lack of appitite and colour loss etc. A dose of octozin can't do any harm thought right?
Nige. I have tried in the past to get medication from the vets when I used to keep discus. But they always said no as they did not know what they where treating!
Ste. Hope I don't lose him ££££££!!
Paul. thanks for your advice. No I haven't ever fed them bloodworm; Just Cichlid flake and pellets and prawns and peas.
Does anyone know where I can get SeaChem's Metronidazole from in the UK as mentioned here: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/malawi_bloat.php |

Metronidazole as far as i am aware is only available from vets, although it can be ordered from europe. have you introduced any new fish recently.
octozin can be used and wont do any harm |
