what colour sand? i use the Argos play-sand. I once used Silica Sand and that can look grubby, maybe its the colur of the sand rather than the mess? |

JONIE, HOW DO YOU SIPHON SAND?
ALL IT WILL DO IS SUCK THE SAND UP? |
10-11-2006 14:04 by OLD MAN
|
DONT USE SAND FULLSTOP. MUCH BETTER WITH A NICE NATURAL LOOKING GRAVEL.
IT IS A PAIN TO CLEAN AND WILL ALWAYS LOOK DIRTY. |

I said syphon off the bits, not the sand its self
Not getting into another arguement with you so we'll just have to agree to differ |

YER BUT IF YOU SIPHON OFF THE BITS YOU WILL ALSO SIPHON OUT THE SAND.

im have to suck the *** of mine every other day, sometimes every day if it does my nut in.
the good thing though is that the *** doesnt bury itself, if you had gravel it burys and stays in the aquarium alot longer |

dave w, what i would say is.
i looks ace sand does! but to answer your question, i dont think there is any way of keeping it clean. |

I had gravel in my old tank and the gravel was always full with *** no matter how much i siphoned it. I have put sand in my new tank after one shop told me it was a nightmare to siphon and a different shop told me its fine once settled just keep your siphon a little away from the sand (you don't need to disturb the sand like you do with gravel because the **ap sits on top rather than sinking in to gaps) also i have corys and a few other bottom feeders etc.. that stir it up enough to get it into the water body and off away into my large external filter. yes you i still get some crud but the longer i leave the tank the cleaner it seems to get ? I think the fish dig more stirring it up. |

you lot are making me want to put sand back in my tank.

my corys love it, it's great watching them dig and filter the sand back out through their gills. Sorry i'm still new. |

|
i had a mixture of natural gravel and a blue sand at one point. that looked relly good, but again you could not siphon it off. |

forget olds man gravel advice, sand is better, looks like the OLD MAN is back |
10-11-2006 21:42 by OLD MAN
|
sand is better i agree 110%
BUT
how do you clean it? it just gets on your **** and before long you change back to the gravel. |

I got my sand from a lfs and dont have a problem siphoning it, you just need to be a little careful. I need to put my siphon within about 5-10mm of the sand to suck the **ap up without disturbing the sand, further wont lift the crud, touch the sand and you loose a cup full of sand. You just need a steady hand, best to restrict the power of your siphon to give a little more control. I find it looks a lot tidier than gravel full of crud that you cant get out. |

thanks lads for all your advice it seems as though there is no easy solution , i'll just stick my head in the tank and drown myself |
