Hi. I know you have to be careful of what stone/rocks you put in your tanks because of metalic inclusions. This might sound odd but we have a lovely big stone which has been throuraly cleaned well. Its an outside stone found on a playing field. Would that be a harmful stone to put into a tank? |

i would boil it and leave it in some of your water change for a week and test for metals then put it in the tank when fully satisfied oh did you sort the new tank? |

some stone contain lime, and if you require a stone that doesnt, do a vinegar test on it, put some vinegar on it ,if it fizzes dont add if it dont fizz then i expect it would be safe. |

vinegar test is a good one and i like mikk's test aswel if you have a few metal test kits avalible. |

mikk what heavy metal test kit are you recommending I have failed in every attempt to find one.
Incidentally a rock can contain a metal inclusion that is not immediately soluble so mikk suggestion is not viable unless the inclusion has begun to oxidise further from its ore state, it will not leach unless of course it is a lead inclusion all bets are off wuth lead.
The soaking will reveal whether or not the rock will alter ph the vinegar test will not produce a result on all limestone so equally do not depend on this as an all clear but it is a useful indicator.
I would advise steering clear of any igneous or metamorphic rock go for a sedimentary as these are just solidified mud or sand and are normally pretty harmless. |
