Light on Tank |

Hi. I have coldwater fish. How many hours a day should the light be left on? I tend to turn it off when im out (work) as im one of those who worrys about electrics blowing and with it being a bulb i get worried. Though when the light is off the tank seems real dark. What is the actual amount of time the light should be on as they say coldwater fish need a fair bit of light.
Thanks |

As long as it gets some light (i.e there is a window in the room - for a day/night cycle) You do not need any light.
So you can just put it on when you are about. If you have plants, you will require a light for 8-12 hours a day.
Most coldwater fish will come from cold climates with different seasons so light length is not an issue and may well come from the bottom of a lake or river where visability is poor anyway. |

yes I read the light reduces algae. I have a big bay window in the room but this time of year and especialy like today (over cast) its still pretty dark. Generaly im putting light on about 3.15 pm until 10/11pm though some days like today is from 12 mid day as my boy has just been indefiantly excluded from school so going to be home more. Im just a little worried if I leave it off or its not on enough it might cause problems.
I dont have natural plants in the ank just plastic ones at the moment as they keep pulling them up and there getting caught in the filter |

use a timer, you will be fine.
if you have no plants it is totaly up to you how long they come on for.
you can even get 7 day timers so you can change the times each day. |
