Hi. Im getting so *** confused. I have alsways had my fish in a 50 gal tank (part from when I broke last one lol) anyway I keep being told different things, On another forum Ive just been told a 50 gallon tank isnt big enough for 4 fish (orando, pearscale, other fancy thing and a small canary yellow. They said in a year I will have to get a bigger tank, is this true as 50 gallons seems big enough to me for 4 fish which are fancy.

Also im being told im over feeding them, there fed once a day, so i changed it to every other day as didnt want to overfeed and now im being told there not fed enough. Ive had fish for 3/4 years and not had anyproblems but since joining forums its all confusing me and Im worried im doing everything wrong.

The problem is that different people have different ways of acheiving success.

One thing you can do to check your feeding is ok, is to check your water for nitrites and nitrates - if these are ok and not too high in the case of nitrates you are doing fine. As long as your readings are ok, I see know reason why you shouln't feed daily. If you have any readings you can either upgrade your filter or reduce feedings to once every two days - obviously upgrading your filter is better.

I cetainly feel that 4 fish with a potential size of approx 8" should be ok in a 50 gallon tank. As long as your water is ok, and when you look at your fish they dont appear crowded you are doing fine.

The fish are the key though, watch them and keep doing what is successful for you.

the rule of thumb for cold water was always 10 gallons per fish wasnt it?

theres not right way of feeding etc etc just do what works.

people say different things because of how they personaly achieved succes. i have kept 5 big goldfish in a 4 foot tank that was over aerated and over filtered and they then started to breed every 2 weeks for a few months before i built a pond and raised the fry

My water has always been bang on ok The fish are still small so as they grow and maybe reach the 8" size if they dont seem happy i would upgrade the tank size. I always thought it was 10 gallons per fish rule also so now they have that plus an extra 10 gallons to share lol.

How long is it before they reach the 6-8" size roughly? My goldfish took 3 years to get to 4" saying that my orando is already 3".

It is dependant on lots of things - firstly genetics - they may not be programmed to grow very big. I would say something like an inch a year could be expected. With weekly water changes and a good food.

But don't panic - the important thing is that you give them the potential to grow and are not stunting them (which you are not).
