Hi Dave

I'm not sure whether this info will help, but having worked with salmonids in the farming scenario, we used to treat gill fluke with formalin (100% formamyde). It is horrific stuff, but works like a treat. I use a formalin/malachite green mix on my tropicals whenever i have problems - it shifts ANYTHING!!! Where you can pick it up though i don't know. I'm lucky enough to work with the stuff to 'borrow' some now and then. Its a carcinogen and will burn your nostrils to the point of bleeding if you get too close (i did say it was nasty!), but if you manage, i'd advise on the good old 'tip and test' for treatment dosage. In trout and salmon its 200ppm for 1hr as a bath; but trout and salmon would survive a nuclear bomb in comparison o most species ;o) Hope this helps! Gareth...

Search the disease category. Alan had this prob a while back 06-04-06

How do you know they are gill flukes? You need low power microscope to confirm this. Gill flukes have the eye spots unlike skin flukes and there are dozens of species.

Sometimes gill scrapping will not reveal any and occasionally a post mortem of the gill filaments is required.

Discus are major carriers of the disease with infection being passed from adults to young.

Livebearers are prone to them too and very difficult to obtain totally gill fluke free stock,

As Gareth mentioned use Form/MG usually sold as a proprietry treatment. Dont overdose and treat with lights off or at night time if treating whole tank.

More than likely the form will be at 35-40% strength and not 100%. Treat on days 1,3,5 water change and repeat 10-12 days afterwards. They are stubborn parasites due to protective egg stage, def the hardest ecto parasite to eradicate from fish stock.
