He's very laid back, he's scared of most fish in the tank.
25-11-2006
18:29 by -Rob C-
bruce its just a time bomb waiting to go off sooner later hes gonna start killing. and you should seriously thin down on your fish, its very crowded even when you do get a 6x2x2

I know it's different to this thread but what metynnis is his, it can't be natural.

19:37 by heros hero
why has nobody picked up on the pair of 10" central american cichlids in a 24" tank? There's responsible fishkeeping. Can we also discuss the 11 foot of fish in the 4 foot tank? Do you not feel guilty when you look in that tank? The little boys that see your stock list may be impressed but anybody with any experience will tell you to do something about cutting your stock right down.
25-11-2006
19:58 by paul stevens
LOL @ heros hero.

1) How do you know that they are 10"

2) How do you know that there 11 foot of fish in a 4ft tank..
3) Have you seen bruses tanks..

And i think that when bruse gets hes 6ft tank there will be more than enough space for the fish that bruse has got now.

And im sure he will show use the pics of it when he has set it up then we can comment on it.

As for bruse not knowing anything about fish maybe you should go back through the threads that bruse has posted and aswered to you will find that he prob knows a lot more than most people on here.

Keep the good work up bogbrush..
25-11-2006
20:03 by saz
Well said paul stevens!
25-11-2006
20:13 by heros hero
1)lets see. Max size of texas cichlid is 10", want to argue with that? Kept them? LOL at stupid comment
2)max size of parrot cichlid (i'm guessing we're talking the hybrid, not the true parrot)10" to 12" x9. Max size oscar 12" to 14" x2. Do the math
3)yes,hence the response.

The 6ft has been "coming" for how long now? Get the tank, then the fish, is how it goes.

Perhaps those that give such good advice should know better.

All the information is out there chap.
25-11-2006
20:24 by paul stevens
(quote) heros hero im guessing...

So if your guessing why are you making comments on what hes got and not got.

1) Yes right texas cichlids do get to 10" but the point is do you know what size they are now...

2) Your guessing...

3) Glad you agree on hes response.

But as for the 6ft tank im on here every day and ive not hurd bruse saying about getting a 6ft tank for that long.

Might be nice to see what your list is like and what you have had in your tanks in the passed.

All the info is out there mate but what was out there 20yrs ago....?

Look at all the things that you should do NOW but 20yrs ago it was un-hurd of.
25-11-2006
20:49 by jonie
exactly paul heros your wrong here mate how do you know he isnt going to get the 6 foot
how do you know he aint gonna upgrade the 2foot when they grow
25-11-2006
21:20 by Danny Boy
tell you what i know. bruce ignores advice when people tell him X cant mix wih Y.. theres a thread a while back where the guy was told not to keep some fish with others but did anyway and then a second thread about a month later when they had been killed. as far as im concerned thats animal cruelty
25-11-2006
21:22 by paul stevens
Ya a harsh man danny..
25-11-2006
21:34 by jonie
but he's got a point paul!!
25-11-2006
22:00 by paul stevens
Ok maybe i dont no that ive not seen that thread.

Im not having a go at anyone here just that heros hero was a bit bitchy to us all for not noticing it.
25-11-2006
22:06 by jonie
ok me neither
25-11-2006
22:09 by heros hero
So we need to pool our collective knowledge and experience and ask ourselves whether we would recommend that 11 fish with the potential to reach and grow beyond 10" should be housed together in a 200 litre, 4ft tank. I'd expect the answer to be no. Should a pair of fish with the potential to reach 10" be kept in an 80 litre, 2ft tank? Again i'd expect the answer to be no. Even 20 years ago it was recommended that a single oscar be housed in a 4ft tank. If you've ever kept and especially if you've ever bred oscars, you'll know how they can make other tank mates suffer.
My stock list?
1)4x2x2. 7xdiscus,4xangel,3xhoplo,6xcorydora
2)5x2x2.2xheros rotkeil,2xnics,2xmultispinosa,1xred sev,1xheros notatus
3)2x1x1.2xhemichromis bangui
4)2x1x1.community (platy,tetra,gold nugget plecs)
5)nano marine.1xocellaris,1xyellow tail blue damsel,1xsymbiotic goby/shrimp pair
6)4x1x1.marine (cycling)
7)3x1x1.1xfrontosa
3x1x1.2xgold heros
I've kept and bred all sorts of stuff (mainly cichlids) so i'm not talking out of my back passage where fish are concerned.
Not aiming to start a fight here fella, i'm sure you know plenty about fishkeeping, but take a look at bruce stock list and ask yourself whether you'd do the same. As for the butti tank, have a read of other peoples experiences with them and ask yourself whether it would be best on its own or gotten rid of.
Nothing personal in this, just my opinion and experience.
25-11-2006
22:13 by jonie
3x1x1 with frontosa a fish with the possibility to grow to 12"
25-11-2006
22:14 by jonie
5x2x2.2xheros rotkeil,2xnics,2xmultispinosa,1xred sev,1xheros notatus

thew sev may interbreed
25-11-2006
22:26 by heros hero
surely that 12" frontosa is fine in a tank 3x his adult size? Some on here think 11x 12" fish are good in a 4 footer. What's your point little man? got a prob with interbreeding heros? Might prove to be nicer than blood parrot and i'd not put them up for sale anyway.Again, what's ya prob little man?
25-11-2006
22:39 by paul stevens
heros hero i wasnt saying that you was wrong in any way just that i know that the fish that bruse has got at present are mostly small so getting a 6ft tank is the way to go for now then we can ask him when, what and how he has set it up like then we can pick holes in him well not so much picking holes but put him on the right lines of how he should and what should be right and wrong.

Its like my set up at the mo most of you have seen what I've got in my 4x2x2 and my 6x2x2 will be here after Xmas and I've just got myself a 2ft green arowana giraffe cat and a shovel-nose cat but hey ho they will get what they need when they need it.
25-11-2006
22:49 by paul stevens
And we have had this before about 20yrs ago we never had meds to add to your water we never had this thing about washing your filters out in your tank water.

All we used to do was fill the tank with tap water and leave it for 2 weeks plus to let the water mature.

And there was no internal filters it was all under gravel filters.

There was no test kits for your water.

And it goes on but we are in the 20th century now and every thing has to be done by the book.
25-11-2006
23:01 by heros hero
thing is paul, 20 years ago there weren't the additives in the water that there are now, so tap water was less of a problem for fish and fishkeeping in general. The advances made in filtration and medication mean we can keep a far greater range of fish than we used to, but that doesn't mean we should keep them all at the same time! Be honest with you, i still rate under gravel for planted tanks, the roots get in through the slots right into the muck.
25-11-2006
23:11 by paul stevens
I still say that under gravel filters are the best telboy still uses them in some of hes tanks and they are gin clear.

Theres is a massive variety of fish now than there was then but is it because of the water quality now or is it because there is all the meds out there now to be able to keep these fish...
25-11-2006
23:42 by heros hero
is as much to do with the improvements in fishkeeping as the improvements in catching and transporting them.
26-11-2006
07:12 by darren
Paul,Heros
You both have good points on this subject but at the end of the day the youngsters on this site are here to learn from us guys with 10,20,30 years+ experience of fishkeeping
I am sure we have all mixed fish at some point that we know are incompatible but still people carry on "EXPERIMENTING"
To be fair to bruce he does seem to have a fair knowledge of fishkeeping in general and yes it should be the tank first then the fish but how many of us stick to this rigorously i wander
Just my humble opinion and not posted to p!£$ anyone off
26-11-2006
09:01 by Bogwoodbruce
The texas are 4 and 3 inch and have plenty of room and i'm gonna thin out some of the fish and my uncle wants a oscar when it's bigger so i can thin out. And thanks for stickin up for me paul.

thats still leaves you with alot of fish and not alot of tank space.

I havnt been a member on ac for very long but bruce is always one of the first on hand to help out, i believe he knows his stuff and knows what hes doing and its great a lad of his age takes so much interest in the hobby..shame there arn't more like him! sounds to me like you doing a great job bruce
26-11-2006
10:32 by Cichlid Fury
i think Heros Heros was just using his experience to help raise some points which should be the whole point of the forum. I think he did it in a fair and decent way. I think some members of this forum seem to "know each other" more than some others and creates this "dont attack my friend mentality" well its about fish at the end of the day and ultimately there are some bizaare combinations in these tanks, would also appear some over stocking which can be the result of people just getting too "excited" and "carried away" especially if the person (Bruce) knows about fish, it makes it even a bit more bizaare, but if it works, it works at the end of the day! But atleast he's honest about it and i for one would not want to write a post that made anyone feel attacked. This forum needs people like Heros Heros to create a balance, he is not part of any "clique" it would appear and therefore his input is very balanced, accurate and seems to stick to the pure fish keeping issues rather than "he's my mate" kinda thing. Not having a go at ANYONE on here, its just from a relative "outsider" reading this thread this is my view
26-11-2006
10:59 by paul stevens
Well there's a thing.

I don't no where you get the friend thing from cf that's got nothing to do with it in this case and with me its got nothing to do with it full stop.

Its like telboy and me we are mates but if i think that telboy has done something wrong i would be the first one to tell him and i would like to think that he would do the same for me.

But all it was if you go back and read the 1st post from heros hero he was having a bit of a dig at us lot for not noticing the dos and donts.

Its nice to have people like heros hero, Alan, Danny boy and others because your right this forum does need people like them and there's nothing wrong with that at all.

But there is a way of doing and saying things and not pointing the finger at others.

Thats all i was saying.

Cant wait until a certain member of ac reads this in the morning..

The pike is only 3inch and the dolar are big enough and fast enough to get out of the way. If it is the pike your refering to.
26-11-2006
13:16 by Bogwoodbruce
And if it's the butty, not all of them r killers, one of uncles mate had a butty live in a tank full of silver dollars and synos and it didn't bother them.
