Cross-breeding Tropheus - good or bad? |

Our wild caught Tropheus Kachese male has turned out to be a female and has just bred with 1 of our F1 Tropheus Moliro. She's the largest of our Tropheus and has always been tank boss but today she's just become the 'chased' instead of the 'chaser'.
Is this a good or bad cross match and will the fry be saleable? |

its a bad match because the hobby is already full of un pure strains of fish and mutts. even worse than that is the fact that yours are wild caught too. most purists would say the best thing you can do is to leave any fry in the tank for the fish to eat. and im always the very first to cry out against this kind of thing but i must say i agree, |

the thing is if you leave the fry in the tank, they won't get eaten by the tropheus, as it is quite rare for them to eat their own young.
we have 13 moliro & 16 cherryspot bulu points & the moliro are forever breeding ( but only with the moliro ), & we leave the mothers in the tank to spit, as we know they won't get eaten & currently have about 25 - 30 babies in there swimming around, the biggest are now 2", smallest 1cm.
so unless you have other fish likely to eat any fry, the majority if not all will survive!
tropheus keepers are usually purists, & will only buy fry that look the real deal, they are expensive fish at the end of the day.
do you have any other kachese, or just this one?
if you do only have the one, i would either sell her, or set up another tank for a kachese colony. |

I would sell them, as people have said beofore theres enough hybrids as it is. |

I think it would be irresponsible to sell any hybrids,f1's will be very strong genetically and will pollute the bloodline of any comunity they are put in,the choices are to keep them and their resultant fry which will result in hundreds of fish,or cull them and make sure it does not happen again, this is a difficult situation that many Rift keepers face, but muts will only degrade the species in aquaria. |

Thanks for the advice everyone, unfortunately we only have the 1 kachese, we did have a couple of others but they died and the 1 we're left with we thought was a male until yesterday - I did a double double-take when I saw them breeding.
We've decided to leave them and see how they turn out - at least we know they'll be red
And don't worry any purists out there we won't sell them without saying exactly what they are, you have my word on that OK. |
