Hi. My blackmoore is really not its self. I noticed a week ago he wasnt eating properly. When I feed the fish he wasnt going eagerly to get the food but would slowly rummage at the bottom where hardly any falls to. He has been slowly going sluggish and top dorsel fin is clamped down. Now since yesturday he is just sitting at bottom of the tank looking real miserable. Ive checked the water an its fine, the others are fine also. I havent a clue what is wrong. Any suggestions pleae. |

Don't know, i used to have these problems with fancy goldfish in the past. Is there enough oxygen in the water. |

oxygen wont be the issue or the fish would be constantly at the top of the tank.
platy suffer from clamped fins when they age, its not something ive ever been able to identify from one fish to another. although im not saying that clamped fins means a fish is old.
it could be that your fish is constipated, i know with tropical fish we feed peas but cannot be sure if that can also apply to cold water fish with a lower metabolic rate |

Maybe theres an internal problem? |

Oxeygon is fine. I feed pease and veg regulary in there diet and he has just done a poo which looks great. I just put in bloodworms today and he ate some tha managed to get to bottom of the tank.
How would I know if ts an internal problem?
He can swimm ok but is choosing not to. The very few times he is swimming he moves ok and the fin may go up for a second and then dwon again. Im really puzzled but he dont seem happy at all. I wasnt sure about getting a blackmoore as Ive heard they die easy, if this one does I ownt get anymore |

a water change right now will do more good than harm. id do 30% and see if he perks up a little |

black moors will like the temp slightly higher than most other "coldwater" fish/fancies |

I did a water change last night and added salt (sorry out of tarter sauce) lol.
Telboy, What temp is best fro them then? Ive actualy turned the heating off in this room as i wondered if the water may be to warm.
Hve to say since then he has picked up a little |

Keep them about 80f 27c that will keep the germs at bay. |

no it wont paul that will give them whitespot. coldwater fish should be kept in water no hotter than 72f |

blackmoors are fine goldfish ive got 2 and had them for 2years or so. ive had swimming issues in the past but a strict bottom feed ( gold japan food ) sorted that out.
now they swim around with my fantails and pearscales and others fine.
hope he/she perks up soon m8. also maybe try other foods. |

I panicked then at that high temp
Water is at 70f always has been, how would o raise it that little bit higher
Last night at about 10pm she picked up somewhat (infact alot) she was swimming round the tank like she had just been given speed she was also nipping and chasing other fish stressing them out a bit
Thismorning when I woke she was pretty active swimming normal and now in the last hour she is back at bottom of tank again with dorsel fin clamped down looking miserable as anything
I dont get it. It seems to be every time we put some sort of heating on in this room which we have to as this is a cold room. Maybe she likes the water colder or maybe she is now nocturnal and partying all night so knackered through day
Really odd behaviour and its concerning me. If a was looking at a tank full of fish and choosing one to buy I definatly wouldnt pick her. |

it could be constipated like others said try peas. or laxatives joking it could have worms |

The blackmoore is alot better now, still has odd moments at sitting at bottom loking depressed but most time now is swimming happily about |

It was probably some sort of internal infection it happens some times and the fish normally fight it off themselves if the water is kept spot on keep on top of water changes or possibly do more and make sure you clean the substrate at every water change using a siphon gravel cleaner this will keep back ground bacteria as low as possible. |
