Posted split fins?

i came home from school and checked on my coldwater tank and then my tropical tank and noticed that about 3 of my rainbow cichlids had split fins with little tufts of fungus growing on them. i hadnt noticed it before so it would hav had to have happened today. it could be finrot. the only thing i could think that are causing the trouble are my kribs hoo i think paired off. they dont appear to be too aggresive so im not sure. what would be the best way of treating them? whats the best treatment i could get. im going to my lfs tommorow so i could get it then. should i isolate the affected fish? none of my other fish are ill and the ones that are arent sulking but are colourful and swimming about what can i do ? thanks tom

bluboy, sounds like finrot to me,prob caused by ya kribs.you might not notice them having a go,but beleive me theyre nasty little buggers when they pair up! they'll prob doing the damage when the lights go out? kribs will have a go at almost any fish, whatever the size matey

its easy to give a cure but this wont solve the problem long term. only a quick fix. id guess from what ive read of your posts that you have a good knowledge of fish keeping so dont be offended when i say that normally fin rot is related to bad water conditions. are you making enough water changes? and enough percentage each time?

dont worry dan im not offended. could it be a build up of nitrates? i missed out my 20% water change last weekend cos i went away. i changed about 10% oof it on wednesday. i run out of test kits and only test my water when the fish arent looking good or im having a problem like this. ill buy sum more tommorow and some fungus and finrot treatment by interpet. its always worked when i have used it before. should i get rid of the kribs? i dont realy want to but i might have to. if i find the waters bad ill change about 30% of the water and re-test. should i set up a hospital tank? i dont have much money so dont know if i could. also mum has said "NO MORE TANKS".HOW MUCH WATER SHOULD I AIM TO CHANGE EVERY WEEK? oops wasnt shoutin. p[lease help i dont want my fish to die

I think its fin rot, one of the most common, and most preventable, diseases in aquarium fish. It is caused by several types of bacteria, and often occurs concurrently with other diseases. It can usually be cured, but if left untreated, it can kill the diseased fish and infect all the others in the tank.

The fins begin to fray and get ragged, becoming shorter over time. Usually the edges look white, and may even develop a fuzzy growth due to secondary Cotton Wool infection. A the disease advances the area may become red an inflamed, with *** patches appearing as more of the fin is eaten away.

im gunna get sum treatment today and then put a divider in the tank and put the kribs on one side and the other fish on the other side. its gotta be finrot. it doesnt look to serious at the moment but ill get it fixed. i also rad inone of my books that it iscaused by bad water conditions OR stress. is it possible that the kribs are stressing the fish that arent fast enough to escape when they enter their territory. either way ill put the divider up and get some interpet treatment and some test kits. thanks for all the help people. tom

kribs will be the initial cause ie pestering + nipping, but then the finrot bacteria will get in + do their damage! have ya checked to see if the kribs have spawned bluboy???

hav checked today. no eggs so i moved a load of rocks around and made a big group of caves on one end. two of the rainbow cichlids have sorted themselves out when i added some salt to the water (aquarium of course) after tashas advice. the ciclids seem to stay clear of the caves now soo guess they got the hint from the kribs! the corys stay away aswell. now both male and female stick in the cave. the male chases other fish awaywhen they come too close. and the female hangs around the cave. ive seen the female contorting now and she shivers alot. i think they might be about to breed. if they do ill set a partition up and the siphon the fry into another tank and then add the parents. would they eat the fry after this? cheers guys
