can you just keep your heater in your sump or does it have to be in your main tank?

Don't know but it could work in a sump because it wil heat up the water and then pump it around.

in the sump is the best place and not seen in the display tank.

the reason being it is in constant flow, when stuck in the tank you get dead areas.

If you are going to put a heaters in your sump the only advice i would give is go for 400watt heaters or above , as the water cools down slightly on its way back to the tank and could mean the heater working 24/7 this time of year , I have a 400w and a 300watt on my 250g system and they are working hard . on my smaller systems 90gals and above i have just 400w heaters
