Bricardi and peacocks |

Just a quick question people, are peacock cichlids and bricardis compatable? Ive got them in a two foot breeder tank which is sectioned off, the bricardis have breed and have a few young, but i would prefer it if i could mix them and add a couple more fish just to brighten the tank up alittle. Any info would be very helpful |

i have both brichardi and peacocks and i did try to mix them but the bichardi r shy compaired to the peacocks so i found that u never saw them also they became v aggresive when they bred and most of the tank was taken by them . so im not too sure but i keep mine seprate

Brichardi are comunal breeders and will form a large colony, they will dominate any tank quickly and will damage the peacocks, especially in such a small tank. |

well the bricardis do seem shy compared to the peacocks, i considered getting rid of one of the two if they werent but its a hard decision for me as i basically do not have a clue which one to get rid of. Another question.....could any of the two be ok in a mixed community tank consisting of eels, catfish, silver dollars and angelfish, i am assuming at the minute the water wil be on the soft side as theres a couple of pieces of bogwood in there( no water testing kits at the minute) |

No,you have Malawis and Tanganyikan fish, both require hard water and should not be mixed in a general community tank. |

thing is its not like im new to fishkeeping, i think im wanting people to tell me what i want to hear..lol......i think what i might do is take the peacocks back to the shop....and maybe put 1 or 2 small bristlenoses in there to keep the tank clean...cos its abit of a mess.ive got a spare tank but i dont think im going to bother setting it up..no room |

another question...would a couple of bristlenoses interfear with the bricardis breeding? |

I think that is the right decision, bristlenoses might try but brichardi are little warriors and will defend their eggs and fry,if at a later date you could give them a larger tank,so much the better,a colony of Brichardi is a magnificent sight. |

i know there warriors.this pair killed off another 2 bricardis which were bigger than themselves before they bred for the first time, im just thinking bristlenoses because i can get almost as many i like for free because a friend had a breeding pair. As for a bigger tank, i can only really go to a 3ft, havent got much room for anything bigger, but ill cross that bridge when i come to it |

Free fish,lucky you,a 3 footer would be better,good luck |

id be very careful with the bristle noses i put 3 samllish ones abot 1 inch and the brichardi killed them all. i breed both bristles and brichardi so not big loss . good luck |

well ive just took the peacocks back, set the tank up for the bricardi, bought some plants and rocks, and it looks pretty good if i say so myself, i was just going to get a bristlenose out of my main tank, but youve put me off now with youre story.lol....i bought a better filter system for the tank aswell so hopefully the algae problem will get sorted out and i wont need to add any catfish, but ill see how it goes and hopefully they will like it so much they will produce a fourth set of fry for me |

woz, plants no good with brichardis mate they'll rip em to pieces in no time, dont use bogwood either, try just a few rocks + plant pots round edge of tank as brics like open space to shoal |

We've got a 3ftx18x18 tank with a divider in it, one side there's a colony of ordinary brichardi and the other half of the tank's got a daffodil brichardi colony.
Each side has just one hole-ridden rock with a sand substrate and both lots are thriving.
We've tried keeping brichardi with other fish over the years with limited success. As a breeding pair they will kill or nip endlessly at any other fish they're in with, as a single fish they are fine in with other tangy's or malawi's. |

The tank is to small to house the brichardis and the peacocks and is actually too small to house the peacocks long term as they will get to big.
However in a large enough tank it is possible to keep both together a 4 foot tank would be ideal and the fish can be kept seperate all you would need is rock work at one end and some plants at the other but mainly open water.
The peacocks are open water fish not rock dwellors and as such they do not hold territories and are relatively placid for cichlids unless courting for a harem.
The brichardi's by contrast form a matriarchal group chasing larger fish off as a team but again are placid if there space is repected.
In answer to your question in a 2 foot tank they couldn't be mixed but in a larger carefully designed tank they could easily be housed together as I have managed it myself in the past with absolutely no difficulties. |

Of note if you have to get rid of the peacock or brichardis I would get rid of the peacocks as these will out grow a 2 foot tank whilst the brichardi will not out grow the tank. |

cheers for everyones replys, i have got rid of the peacocks, i know the tank was to small for the two of them, it was just a change it situation which forced the two to be in the same tank, mine do breed in a hole ridden rock, and i will most certainly upgrade the tank when the colony grows. At the minute they seem to be more fussed about there precious rock, cleaning it and moving stones around, they havent even been out of the corner of the tank yet(where the rock is) the little ones are starting to venture out abit, but not going to far away from their parents |
