Should I start fresh? |

Hi, ive opned this in another topic as only tasha is repying in other one lol. Im now down to just one fish!! My black moore died through the night The white specks are back and tiny white worm things. The last remaining fish has now got the white things on the eye like the black moore did. Should I stip tank and clean everything, gravel the lot and start fresh?? I did a big clean last time but things ahvent improved and no one seems to know what the hell these specks and things are. Ive only one fish left now and thats going the way the others did and has this evening started to gasp aswell. Ive moved it to a hospital tank now. I know doing a full clean of everything would be like a new set up but I dont know what to do now. if this one dies I will scrub the lot anyway and start fresh but I think I might go for normal goldfish again. Ive never had problems with them dieing, just seems to be the fancy fish.
Advice please. |

problem 1 fancy goldfish are bred and kept in warm water in china , singapore ect and these fish are bred to look like this its taken years of breeding to get some of the deformaties we see today like pearlscales and celestals , these fish are very weak , and prone to disease , stick to ya norm goldies and shubs and you shouldnt have any problems , white worms possibly planaria , due to poor water quality and movement and a build up of uneaten food |

If its as bad as you are explaining i would do the start afresh !!.....you have nothing left to loose
We often have problems with our fancy goldfish....with excessive white pimples on the Orandas heads etc........last weekend i did a total strip down ( put a juewl rock background in tank at same time )....although i did keep a small in tank filter running but totaly cleaned the external out !
i then filled with tapwater and re aclimatised the fish ......our fancys are kept with heaters in and kept more like a cool trop tank....they layed eggs 2 days after this water/tank change!
go on go for it Andrea |

Its difficult to diagnose without seeing the condition first hand but sounds parasitic so it should be treated as such you best bet is to note down as much info as you can including dxescribtion of size of these visible protusions and the behaviour of the fish and then go to a LFS you trust and have a chat with them describing all the symptoms I suspect they will suggest a malachite green formalin mix type of remedy but I would not like to recommend a remedy myself without seeing this first hand.
A book I feel all fish keepers should have is this one, "The Interpet Manual of Fish Health".
It is the most useful book on fish diseases I know of with easy to follow diagnosis charts ideal for the novice. |

Hi, thanks for the replies.
The water conditions ahve always been good and ive kept on top of that. Ive only fed what they will but this all started a few days after I fed cucumber. I watched them eat it but bits were bitten off. Im wondering if some small bits may of gotton hidden away and caused the problem??? Ive never had this before.
The white wormy things, well the 1st I saw was pretty long and I got rid of that, i thought it could be plantaria at 1st but would they be the cause of the white specks?? Its the white specks that seem to be eggs clinging to the side of the tank. Last night I noticed one slightly larger and it started wiggling like mad, then brok of side and was going round with the current, I lost it by time I got the net Also what are the whit things that grow on the eyes, are these related, from what i read up it sounded like fungal on the eyes but the specks and worms sound like parasites. Im tempted to just give up all together. Grr since I broke my last tank and started a new one up ive had nothing but trouble
Im not confident to try tropical fish I think the only thing I would need to add is a heater, is that right?? (aswell as cleaning tank completly) If I cant keep cold water fish alive what hope would I have of tropical Maybe its just me and fancy fish, like I said I should stick to just normal gold fish and shabunkins.
Arghhhh this is driving me mad. |

Tropicals aren't that hard and i used to have fancy goldfish and they didn't do very well. And goldfish tend to get quite big. |

Trops are actually easier than goldfish plus there not bothered by the hotweather as goldfish can be trops are also better suited to aquarium life than goldfish due to their smaller size.
No point giving up we all go through disasters from time to time I had a white spot out break on my reef now that is a reason to give up but I didn't I nearly did mind you. |

Ohh, Im at a loss. I shall see if I can sort this problem out. If I cant and I lose my last fish I might go over to trops. Am I right in saying I only need a heater?? Can the heaters be set at right temp? What are the best fish to start with?? |

Andrea we keep both tropicals and fancies and the fancies are much harder to keep healthy .....all you need is a heater and they have a thermostat that will switch on and off to keep the water to the right temp!
If you decide to go to tropicals i would say choose something that is suited to your local water .....eg hard or soft.....this will help in the long term |

Hi Robert, thanks. We have hard water so If I do go over to tropicals which fish would be recommended, also what are best fish for starters like me. Im aware some fish arent compatable but not a clue which ones?
So I need recommendations of fish (incase my last fancy dies) |

Aww poor fish.
Well I did a full tank clean and scrubbed everything!! Reset it up again. Took me 2 hours over I put the my last remaining fish in another tank which is only suitable for one anyway and since then things are looking better. Im leaving the original tank to re establish again and then I will start adding fish again.I think I will go for normal goldfish and shabunkins etc..
The only thing with the fish I have left is it seems to have a dull whitish colour covering it But seems happy enough. |
